OT: World Politics

Oh for sure. And surely they know that?

Holland has a large population of folks who might be hostile. Gotta be smart, soccer stadiums are risky places.

seems like all the violence occurred outside the stadiums? and was organized in advance by the perpetrators?

I agree with you about situational awareness, especially on hostile turf as a sports fan, but this appears to go well beyond that...

Violence usually occurs outside the stadiums. (I am reminded, somewhat, of when the French police had to go rescue some drunken English yobs who pissed off a bunch of Tunisians near the port of Marseille.)

Anyway, soccer (1) makes people travel and then (2) assembles them in one place. This makes them vulnerable re: transfers outside the stadium - think train stations. Just gotta be smart.

yah doesn't sound like 'being smart' would have made any difference here though. let's not victim blame.

Anyway.

My real point is this: this will continue. The violence will come to the west. Soft targets everywhere.

Can’t be naive about that.

It was anti-Semitic, no doubt. And obviously violence is intolerable. The finger pointing on social media makes a muddle of who says what and when, so that’s noise at this point.

But football violence and charged atmosphere at stadiums and their vicinity is a fact of life and it’s well known that travelling supporters tend to be the hard core. Need to be smart, careful and situationally aware as a travelling fan. That goes for all clubs.
Yep, I went to a PSG game in Paris once.

Once.

Most football hooligans these days, even in England, does not take place inside or even just outside the stadium, and the participants are more likely to be wearing Burberry jackets than team jerseys. The game itself is a sideshow. It's merely an excuse to meet up and brawl. The leaders of the rival firms call each other to arrange a place where the cops won't be waiting. None of them.ever actually attend the games because law enforcement has made it too difficult for them to get in.

They may have been tamed by the Petro money in recent years, but back in the day PSG had very violent neo-Nazi ultras
And my ticket was right next to them (we were separated from the Ultras by a 10 foot corrugated metal barrier with spikes on top. My section was full of Ultra wannabe's who were nearly as bad.

I stayed until halftime and then got the fuck out of there while the getting was good. I had to pass a phalanx of riot cops in full gladiator gear just to get to the Metro station.
