OT: World Politics

Its not a new battlefield. And TikTok is just the worst of it.

Foreign entities are getting American kids on the side of Hitler and Bin Laden.

And its not a new strategy at all. there are interviews with old KGB agents explaining the generational plan of ideological subversion to destroy the west by sowing discord among the population and having them eat themselves from within. Its way worse than just election interference.

and it's working, way too damn well.

I'm so grateful that over 33,000 US troops (and over 500 Canadian troops, for that matter) died so that this "democracy" could exist.

Without their sacrifice, we wouldn't have M*A*S*H or K-pop today.

Yes, clearly that was all a completely wasted effort, and it would’ve been much better if the entire Korean peninsula was ruled by the Kim dynasty instead.

Jesus.

Koreans seem to like that kind of leadership. Besides, if the US hadn't intervened and all of Korea had become like today's North Korea, would the world be any different than it is, except for people in South Korea?

The US lost the Vietnam War. South Vietnam was overrun by the commies. Did the rest of the world change much? Did the lives of ordinary Americans change? 58,000 US troops were killed in that war. The US lost the war, and life in America, except for the families of those killed, was unaffected.

So yeah, kind of a waste.

what did the korean person do to you, wehave?
The only Korean person I ever knew was a nice lady who was my first piano teacher back in 1973.

Now answer my question. What difference would it have made if the North Koreans had just overrun the South And the UN hadn't intervened? Then do Vietnam.

These were useless proxy wars that achieved nothing and changed nothing. And in both Korea and Vietnam the US had to prop up corrupt, criminal regimes that the people hated. And why did the US sacrifice their troops for these scumbag politicians? Because they were anti-communists. Big effin' deal.

Meanwhile in Ukraine, things are not going so well :(

Obviously not good, but that has to be put in some context. 700 sq km of a country that is 603,000 sq km. Even if you subtract what is already held by Russia, it's a 500,000 sq km country. A bit more context, the GTA is 7100 sq km. So the Ukraine's lost empty field and forest the equivalent of the area of Mississauga, Brampton, and Oakville combined. More more context: Ukraine currently holds 800 sq km of territory in Kursk, taken over the same time period as they lost the 700 in Donbas.

Korea united under the Kim dynasty would be a much, much bigger problem today than it already is. It would be a 75 million pop hermit nuclear power and there probably would have been a war with Japan years ago.

Also, without forcing it's over spending on foreign affairs and military output to keep pace with the US, the USSR probably never collapses and instead of facing Putin's diminished Russia today, we're still facing an energy super power USSR.

So basically the same thing

Got it

More political fun for France—their government has just fallen.

This is the center-right coalition that Macron tried to hand the reins of government to after left-wing parties won a plurality in the snap election Macron called during the summer.

Those left-wing parties all joined forces (along with Marine Le Pen’s bloc) and voted out Macron’s government.

this is... like their version of Parliament right, like the MPs?

Macron was elected separately, I believe?

or do I have it all mixed up?

Yep. In some ways, France’s government is like ours or the UK, with a parliament and a Prime Minister who’s appointed by the head-of-state and serves as long as they have the confidence of the house.

But in France, instead of a Governor-General or monarch, the head-of-state is the President, who is elected to five-year terms. That President is Macron and his current term runs to 2027.

And what just happened specifically is that the PM that Macron appointed (who wasn’t really a reflection of the election results) has lost a no-confidence vote in parliament and his government has been dissolved as a result. And it’s up to Macron to find a new person to appoint as PM, who can secure the confidence of parliament.
