I'm trying to figure out what is going on in South Korea and as far as I can tell this is just a blatant power play by their PM?

Like, there is no actual basis for imposing martial law? And once Parliament convenes, they will undo it, if they are allowed to vote?

What am I missing here?

Thats the takeaway I'm getting as well. Deeply unpopular president trying to avoid impeachment using imaginary bullshit to justify a snap coup.
 
Yeah, the Coles notes version of this appears to be that he’s an unpopular Conservative President who’s butthurt about the fact that the Liberal, opposition-held parliament won’t pass his legislation.

And he’s also beset by scandals and alleged corruption that he refuses to let parliament investigate.

So, he’s trying to coup.
