OT: World Politics

This was my take on this too, it's the only path to ending the war that preserves both sides. The Ukranians have only one path out of this unfortunately due to having their hands tied behind their backs by the West and that path is a negotiated settlement. In any negotiation, you have to give something up. We know the Ukranians are willing to part with some land, now the question is, can Putin accept NATO membership.

He can’t. Regime survival and imperial conquest doesn’t square with giving something up in negotiations.

And if the shooting stops, you can expect a full accounting of war crimes by the Russians which will make the Serbs in The Hague look like Boy Scouts.

It's a brilliant move by Zelenskyy. Cede a bit of territory but include the poison pill of NATO membership to ensure that the next time Putin decides he wants more, he will trigger Article 5.

Gorilla warfare would beat guerilla warfare every.fucking.time.

Just look at those terrifying bastards

Vlad might actually be smart to take the deal.

Stop the fighting, consolidate the territory he’s taken and start rebuilding his forces—all in exchange for a NATO membership for Ukraine that very soon won’t be worth the paper it’s written on when Trump does his job.

Europe isn't going to fold NATO just because the US drops out. They don't have an ocean between themselves and Russia.

Feasible. He’ll need to sell the story on the inside that delaying until Trump gives him the W. But it’s very risky.

I hope he bites on that premise, because it's a misread imo. I think Europe will be better and more efficient at re arming Ukraine than Russia will be in re arming themselves and there is enough legitimate military capability in NATO even without the US to do the work. Even if it's only the UK, Poland, Finland, and Sweden who show up for the Article 5 party, that's enough.

I'm trying to figure out what is going on in South Korea and as far as I can tell this is just a blatant power play by their PM?

Like, there is no actual basis for imposing martial law? And once Parliament convenes, they will undo it, if they are allowed to vote?

What am I missing here?
