OT: World Politics

lol

I just finished a book on Portugal’s foray into imperialism in the early 16th century. Huckabee’s demented text is about the same as Alfonso Albuquerque’s slobbering appeals to God and King Manuel that justified bombing the shit out of India and the Arabian peninsula. I’ll cut them a little slack since it was, ya know, 500 fucken years ago.

right about the west losing its coherent voice to act in its own interest, wrong about what acts are in its own interest.

I didn’t read the article, but with regards to this quote from the Tweet:

A few quiet generations in the “free world” have produced leaders who don’t seem to grasp what extraordinarily brutal and ugly things had to be done to make them free, or what must be done to stay that way.

This realization is dispiriting, but it does give us some clarity. Netanyahu understands this, and on this point—unlike so many others—the vast majority of Israel’s citizens agree. This is why, at least for now, Israelis are hunkering down with a rare unity as missiles streak down at us from the sky. This war is unavoidable, and no one will wage it but us."

The way I read that and what I take exception to is the idea that the Israeli people in general and Bibi & the Israeli leadership specifically are courageous sages selflessly taking unavoidable, necessary action to protect both themselves and a free world that is too naive, feckless and cowardly to do what must be done to keep themselves safe and free.

Which is a giant, steaming pile of horseshit.

ah yes I'm agreeing with you - writer doesn't realize that Bibi's actions are exactly against "acts in our best interest".

It’s always been we.

He approved the initial Israeli strike, but without the US’s active participation so as to not technically be part of it (even said he told Netanyahu not to do it), though they were always there in full support.

Then he told Iran they better not strike Israel because there were many Americans there. When they did, the US then had a reason to start playing defense and helping to shoot down Iranian missiles.

So now the story can technically be read as Iran provoking the US to join, but clearly they were there from the start and working on this together, and thank heavens for that.

Offering defense to an ally, premised on wanting to keep its own citizens abroad safe, is the way. Until the US fires a missile into Iran, I’m not sure anyone can portray it as being in the war.
