OT: World Politics

Xi has definitely screwed things up, but I still think they can get there if they course correct.

How do they course correct without giving up on Taiwan though? Taiwan is going to continue being the core security issue of the region and if Xi/China doesn't give up on that, or at the absolute minimum turn down the threat level immensely from where it is now, Japan, SK & aligned regional buddies (everyone with coast line on the south china sea + Australia) are going to work to keep China ringed in. Trade normalization like we've seen recently will help a bit, but I think that goes away in a post Trump world anyway. Whatever form the US takes after this little foray, it won't be as 1800's mercantilist about trade.

Tremendous research, tech and human capital advances. India… it’s just so massive.

It is, but they're tectonic plates grinding against each other. They're not natural allies at all. A huge factor in American international dominance was geographic. Two big puddles on either side and since 1812 and 1848 respectively, friendly with the 2 nations they share land borders with. Asia is playing geopolitics on "insane" difficulty.

Stuff like this was predicted months ago when it became clear that Russia had passed a point of no return economically. Leaning on the kleptocrats/oligarchs that he allowed to exist and using the power of the state to clean them out in last ditch attempts to finance his war was always going to happen. That's where they are right now. He's bribing or cleaning out the oligarch class to fund it all and now is when the internal political games get fun when powerful people start questioning if they're next, if there is anyone to ally with to avoid it, can Putin be gotten to, etc, etc.
