OT: WWE/MMA/Boxing Thread

Poirier, Gaethje, Holloway, Wanderlei, Eddie Alvarez.

For my money, possibly the five all-time kings of violence.

Buckley vs that for craziest KO in recent (modern) history in my hesd
Yeah, but even then, the circumstances in this one compared to Buckley's KO make it so much greater.

Up a weight class, against an all-time dangerous striker, massive underdog, for a (phony) title, one of the biggest cards in MMA history, for starters. In a fight he was about to win on the score cards 4 rounds to 1, waving his opponent to the middle of the octogon to slug it out in the last ten seconds of the final round, before putting him out cold in the final second.

I still can't believe I saw that.

Did max lose a round on the judges cards?

But the creativity of the knock out - let alone doing that in the ufc (I would have considered it a KO I’ll remember for the rest of my life as one of the best if it was like cage warriors) - why i have it way up there as best KOs in modern era 2.0. Was a fucken video game from the kick to how the guy fell over.

Both are insane anyway.

Hope max gets both title fights as want to see him fight both. I don’t see the Volk fight going any differently with immediate rematch Max going into Spain after what he did in Brazil to win the title the first time would also be an insane feather in the cap if he could pull it off.

Tsarukyan might be one of the biggest winners of the night to get the shot at the title for sure after what happen to JG. Max calling for the 145 first makes me think that he will go to Spain next.

I am actually really excited for that rematch.

God dammit Dana - make the obvious fight

Holy moly.

After going on one of the craziest weeks I've ever seen for a top fighter, Ryan Garcia pulls off one of the biggest upsets of the year.

What a fight.

So fucking glad I tuned in for it, was an incredible fight…..Haney looked like Haney for the majority of it, and an argument could even be made he maybe deserved a draw, but when Garcia landed, he made them count.

He also wisely used his weight advantage as his version of working the body, by leaning on Haney, anytime he came in to clinch….and it worked, his legs were shot in those final rounds.

I’m a big fan of both Haney and King Ry, but will always root for Ryan just for how beneficial he is to the sport if he’s successful, and on that front it was a phenomenal night for the sport.

Technique for technique, Haney's far superior to Garcia.

The usual problem with Haney popped up once again: He's a pillow puncher. Garcia never had to worry about being aggressive because he had no reason to worry about Haney's power, unlike Tank. When Garcia got too aggressive with Tank, he ended up on his ass.

Garcia used the weight advantage to wear on him & consistently move forward.

One thing I wonder about... It seemed obvious in the build up, but you never know, but did Haney take the fight seriously? Or did he follow the late career Mayweather game plan of "easy fights, easy money"?

Haney is a step below the elite imo. Lots of wins against 3rd/4th tier fighters and he was extremely lucky to get the W against loma (the only high end fighter he has beaten).

I agree with mbow but that Haney is just a step below being truly elite, but for being a 25 year old, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a record with wins over Linares, Gambosa twice, Gamboa, Abdullaev, and Lomachenko even if it was close enough for people to have been split on who won.

Like Tank is only a handful of months away from being 30, and I don’t think he’s got as impressive a resume as Haney had coming into this fight.

Given how protected fighters have become over the years since Mayweather…..I feel like Haney and Ryan have been a breath of fresh air, in terms of their willingness to take on some pretty significant challenges early on.

It’s pretty shocking that they even agreed to fight each other so soon in their pro careers tbh….given them both huge props for that.

Hopefully this sets a new standard for young fighters going forward where they learn to make meaningful fights early on, and we adopt more of a UFC style appreciation for these fighters and fewer and fewer people give a shit about how many loses guys have on their records.

The era of guys meticulously crafting their careers to stay undefeated as long as possible, was shit for the sport….
