Playoff GDT: Round 2, Game 2 Canes v. Flyers 5/4 7:00

Yeah, they’re just not in touch with reality. They bitched about Game 1 pretty loudly and they had 34 power play minutes. What do you want? 5 on 4 for the entire game?

And FWIW, my complaints are not so much about balance of the calls between the teams as what they’re allowing the teams to get away with in terms of obstruction. Although, Dvorak can take that little head snap of his and stick it up his backside. I can't believe he got away with that crap twice in one game.

It's funny to hear Flyers fans complaining about the officiating today. I guess what, a dozen or more power plays wasn't enough?
The refs' inconsistency allowed the Flyers to get away with constant hooking and grabbing, but complainers are gonna complain, regardless of the situation.

After the first game's self-inflicted high stick, you'd think the refs would be all over these shenanigans, but the wild flopping was allowed to continue.

That first one last night would have been funny if it wasn’t a playoff game. Svech got his stick up around the NHL logo on his Dvorak’s jersey and he took two full beats before deciding to sell it HARD and see if he could get Charron to bite. Honestly, that was late in the 2nd and set the tone for a lot more simulation by both teams in the 3rd before everybody got serious about playing actual hockey in OT. That dumb call led directly to all that BS with guys running into the goalies as things escalated. Exactly the kind of effect that bad officiating can have on a game.

Charron is a clown, BTW. He has zero business working meaningful games but there’s so few decent NHL refs that he’s got well over a 100 playoff games under his belt.

What I liked about that game was the fact this team is not in their heads and better equipped to work through rough patches. I suspect there are multiple factors at play—mindset, depth, talent, skill and confidence. The real intangible is mindset and resilience.

Something to keep an eye on for Thursday. Noah Cates suffered an apparent foot injury. He was seen in the locker room with a walking boot.

That would be a big blow if he can’t play. He’s been a remarkably consistent shift-winner for them over the last 3-4 years. He doesn’t score a bunch but he doesn’t get beat much either. Plus, he’s been holding down that cobbled together 3rd line for them regardless of who else they dump down there with him … usually Foerster and a guest winger. In Game 2, that’s where they stashed Michkov, but sometimes it’s Bump or Barkey when he’s not playing center. He’s also been the puck retriever on their PP1. If he’s out, it also probably pushes up Couturier’s minutes to an uncomfortable level. He’s already well over 20 per night because of special teams usage and he’s been a lot better this season in smaller doses. What the Flyers really need to balance out their lines is to get Tippett back. That’s been killing their balance and they also badly miss his speed.
