Playoff GDT: Round 3, Game 2 Canes v. Habs 5/23 7:00

It’s awesome.

Habs played poorly and still took it to OT. I’m happy with the split. Never expected to sweep the canes.
The Habs are very resilient and can pretty much stay in the game to take advantage of break aways and power plays and snipe there way to victory. To me now they look like they are running on fumes. The pace of the Canes style of play will be the doom of them. There's a game every other day.

You won’t see me defending the refs. That’s HP’s apparent job.
Hey, I agreed that Tex should have got 5.

As for the "high stick" the more we discussed it, the more I got to thinking I was wrong. Like 100% of the time that you see the situation, it's the "victim" who is falling and takes a stick to the face and it's not a penalty because the "offenders" stick isn't above his own shoulders. This is the first time I recall seeing the "offender" on his knees as well... but Dobson's stick is above his shoulders so it should have been a penalty.

As always, I spent some time in the car during the game and tuned into the NHL radio feed on Sirius/XM because it had the Forslund call.

OK … refs sucked. Shocking, I know. Also, apparently we’re all bagging on Maniscalco for some reason. These are not my takeaways because neither of those things could be called surprising. Yeah, Sutherland found a new way to screw up, so I guess that’s kind of noteworthy. He’s now apparently deciding what penalty to award based on how much power play time he feels is “fair” … and I don’t care who you’re rooting for, that crap can’t be allowed to continue. This is now the 2nd or 3rd time in these playoffs that our brilliant refs have seen spearing and decided to call it something different because they don’t like that spearing is a major. That’s just … words fail. The NHL just continues to step on rakes.

The game … not that shocking to see Carolina remember how to defend that breakout play. Mostly because it’s just a breakout play, not freaking witchcraft. They also gapped up much better and handled switches in the D zone much better. Slavin went from a game score of minus 4.5 to plus 4.5, which again isn’t really all that surprising. So, nothing really unexpected last night. Montreal is like gum on your shoe and they refuse to buckle under, so Carolina’s failure to extend that lead almost bit them in the ass, but honestly that’s pretty standard stuff as well.

Even up through 2, so Montreal had the road trip they wanted. Go to Montreal, get the split there and we’re right back where we started … plus the enemies that individual players have picked up along the way. And somebody tell Texier that if he’s gonna pull that crap in that building, he needs to be rocking a gold double breasted suit in the post game. Oh, and his brother should factor in despite not being in the game. If you’re gonna do a Chris Paul, you have to go all the way.

Young team, young legs. The same line has been on the ice for our 3 OT losses and all three losses were due to not getting the puck deep. This will be resolved.

Don’t underestimate these kids on the Habs, we’ve heard they’re gassed often in the other two series. I’m expecting 7 games.

The Canes might need a 7 game series to prepare should they win this one.

A few of the “kids” have already been to a Cup Final. Was it the odd Covid season? Yes. Did they still have to win 3 series to get there? Also yes. I know the Canes aren’t underestimating them. And after watching them 5 times this season fans shouldn’t either.

Even if the Habs lose this series I’m proud of them. The rebuild was relatively quick and they’re learning. They’re showing they belong. The window is just getting cracked open for them.

I’m certainly not waiting for Montreal to get worn out, since they’ve given exactly no signs of that so far. I was one of the few here expecting 6 or 7 games in this series, and I’ve seen nothing to indicate that this won’t be the case. Now that we’ve got that first game nonsense out of the way and everybody's playing at the same speed, I expect this to be a matchup of execution … little details here and there will probably be what determines games. Last night was very much that kind of game.

Canes buttoned up the puck— see SOG.
However, the difference between Philly and Ottawa, they couldn’t convert on open nets. That will not be the issue in this series. The Canes must convert on every open net because the Habs certainly will. This going to be one heck of an ECF!
