I thought Matthews, Nylander, and Hyman looked really good. What a solid line of skill, skating ability, open-ice skill, cycling game, power, etc. There's so much they can throw at opposing lines other than experience. As for Marner, what a terrific end to a very promising preseason. I think it's safe to say he made the team. Of all the prospects we have, Marner projects to be the most exciting of them all -- he can do everything, and he seems to have the right stuff to be the side kick to Matthew's Batman.
I also like the steps forward that Rielly is taking to become an all-around beast. But he needs a right-hand partner to be even more effective. His pairing with Marincin was good last season, but Rielly's going to continue surging forward into elite #1 category, and he needs a RHD partner to ensure he gets there with minimal stress. Hence: Zaitsev. I hope the coaching staff recognizes that. Speaking of Zaitsev, I think top-four is underselling his skill set. He's better than I realized. I guess we'll see when the season starts. He's got so many tools, and his head for the game seems beyond reproach so far. The only question I have is that he seems to get physically beaten at times -- not sure if it's just poor positioning, or just lack of strength.
