Pre-Season GDT: Red Wings @ Maple Leafs | October 8, 2016 | TSN4

Brown can't go buzzing the tower like that expecting the puck to make it out, stay on the puck side of your man until you know the puck is out ffs...and Freddy needs to stop that.

That's a ****ing entertaining pre season game though.

Good fight shown by the kids who matter, with Freddy looking like shit and some of our veteran presence making mistakes veterans shouldn't make.

If Andersen goes the first 4-5 games and looks shaky in all or most of them, would you switch to Enroth for awhile? He looked much more calm and sure in net.

fun game. mrazek was the difference.

i could do with even less hunwick though. actually Marincin and carrick weren't great either. though i think marincin was being asked to play the right side on that pairing, which i don't thi m was the case last year.

If this game was a measuring stick, we have an exciting season to look forward to. Loving the big 3.

I would love to get rid of JVR for a player with similar stats but some balls. That line would look much better if he actually decided to show up.
I suspect you'll get your wish, maybe as soon as this year. He's been underpaid on his current contract, so you have to think he'll want to cash in on his next one. And I just can't see this management group wanting to make a significant long-term investment in a 29 year-old JVR.

It's hard to say. On one hand, Babcock's shown no hesitation to go with the goalie that's winning games for him, both in Detroit where he benched Howard for Mrazek and in Toronto last year, where he nailed Bernier to the bench in favour of Reimer.

On the other hand, the Leafs kind of made their bed with that contract they gave Andersen. They kind of have to ride it out with him at this point.

Babcock on Marner: "He's competitive, fast, he can play without it, block a shot, knows how to play his own zone, he's a real good player"

Give him #93!

most guys i liked tonight. i'll asterisk the guys I didn't:

VanRyk* - Bozak - Marner
Michalek* - Holland - Komarov
Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Martin - Laich - Brown*

Rielly - Marincin*
Gardiner - Carrick*
Hunwick* - Zaitsev

Andersen*

I think it's a given some vets are just not going to take pre-season at 100%, even if it is the last game of pre-season. With that said, I think I can sorta excuse people who have their spot locked up.

Hunwick has looked REALLY bad so far this pre-season, and I hope it's for that above reason. Otherwise, I hope Babs would do the right thing with his "hunny".

I loved the buzz by the young guys, and Hyman should be a fixture on Matthew and Nylander's line for a while, he has (almost) enough skill to tag along, at the same time he is a tireless worker who does all the dirty work along the board and in the corners. And, he has shown he has a feisty side too.

Marner has looked great, but I expect him to be up and down through the first dozen or so games in the NHL.

Andersen has not looked great after his first (half) game ... he was terrible vs. the Habs on Fri, and tonight he got out-goaltended by Mazarek. The last DET goal was a backbreaker ... though it does seems like he was screened on that goal and the shot was tipped too.

Still lots of rookie mistakes, which is expected, but this should be a very exciting team this season. I was especially impressed by what I saw out of Marner, Matthews, Nylander and Zaitsev tonight.

I thought Matthews, Nylander, and Hyman looked really good. What a solid line of skill, skating ability, open-ice skill, cycling game, power, etc. There's so much they can throw at opposing lines other than experience. As for Marner, what a terrific end to a very promising preseason. I think it's safe to say he made the team. Of all the prospects we have, Marner projects to be the most exciting of them all -- he can do everything, and he seems to have the right stuff to be the side kick to Matthew's Batman.

I also like the steps forward that Rielly is taking to become an all-around beast. But he needs a right-hand partner to be even more effective. His pairing with Marincin was good last season, but Rielly's going to continue surging forward into elite #1 category, and he needs a RHD partner to ensure he gets there with minimal stress. Hence: Zaitsev. I hope the coaching staff recognizes that. Speaking of Zaitsev, I think top-four is underselling his skill set. He's better than I realized. I guess we'll see when the season starts. He's got so many tools, and his head for the game seems beyond reproach so far. The only question I have is that he seems to get physically beaten at times -- not sure if it's just poor positioning, or just lack of strength.
