Desharnais would be a simple benchmark: If Reinbacher/Mailloux aren't better than him, they don't play and they're sent back to the AHL.

A starting line up of:

Matheson-Savard
Xhekaj-Guhle
Hutson-Desharnais
Kovacevic
Struble

Seems somewhat realistic. Take into consideration Savard's probably getting traded within the next 9 months and there's always injuries at some point. Not to mention, Desharnais won't be signing a crazy deal in terms of money & length. Might be able to get him for two years @ $1.5M AAV.

We don't need to acquire a mediocre defenseman just so he can be the low bar. We have mediocre defensemen already.

Besides which, and as I have been at pains to point out numerous times, I am not a boomer. I was born too late to be in that cohort nor to partake in its advantages. I am Gen X, the generation who's been cleaning up the mess left by the boomers for the longest time. The smallest generational cohort since the Industrial Revolution.
