They're also at the "we don't really know what to do" stage of being forced to sell all their best players to "bigger" clubs because of financial rules. Isak last year, Tonali and Gordon already this year with Bruno rumored to be trying to force his way to Arsenal. They've already lost three of their top players and are potentially about to lose their most important player. I can't imagine the situation Villa would be in if we were forced to sell Watkins, Rogers, Tielemans and Kamara over the course of two summers.
 
Many U is set to trigger Youri Tielemans’ £35 million release clause. The had been chasing Atalanta’s Emerson but apparently have moved on and focused on Tielemans to replace Casemiro.
 
What the gut punch out of nowhere is this???? I'm not in complete shambles, because apparently psg are looking to trigger Lucas Digne's release clause (I know all of our leadership is from Spain, but they know that in the UK release clauses aren't mandatory, right?). If that ends up being a tease and we lose Tielemans and still have Digne, I might cry.

I love Tielemans but he hurt himself in warmups before Belgium’s last WC game and that has become increasingly a feature of his game … non-contact, soft tissue injuries. I wish him well in Manxland.
 
On the good news front for Villa, it looks like they stole Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi away from Newcastle at the wire. He was VERY good for Freiburg in the second half of the season and is only 20 so he should have room to grow. He’s more of a Teilemans type than and Onana type, so I was a bit curious about the urgency … then I saw the Tielemans news.

Yeah, the rational part of my brain tells me that despite his baby face, Tielemans is in fact one of the oldest 29 year olds on earth in terms of minutes played since he has been a full time starter since he was 16 (insane to think about). I hadn't really thought there was a chance he was leaving, so I hadn't emotionally prepared myself at all.

Yeah, they’ll miss him (especially the line breaking passes) but I really do think he’s at the stage where his legs are wearing down.
 
Okay, I just did the thing I should have done from the start and watched Manzambi videos on youtube and now I'm totally excited with all things Villa other than Onana's ACL tear (seriously, how can one human being look like that and also be made out of glass). I'm such a sucker for anyone who can dribble like that and ride tackles while still keeping your head up. Looks completely two footed as well. We're getting rid of Digne and adding this to our squad? Is it my birthday??? Still gonna miss Tielemans and we need to add another CM and a backup LB and RB (or maybe just give Nedeljkovic an actual shot?), and I've already emotionally prepared myself for the non zero possibility of a Rogers sale this summer.

We are in a much better spot than Newcastle who are in a similar situation to us, but haven't had the continued success over the time period and thus it's easier for "bigger" clubs to get their players.
 
IIRC they have a line on a RB who’s a legit backup type, so that should get done eventually. I haven’t seen much on the other stuff but I think Emery is still going to want another box to box midfielder.

I’m thinking Rogers gets moved after the World Cup, honestly. That fine Villa just got popped with is a reminder that the budget wall is right there lurking still and that selling Rogers for a tidy profit buys them another year … maybe two, depending on how much Champions League cash they can pull in. It FEELS like a gut punch, but then I remember that he was kind of awful most of last season (which went pretty well despite his issues) and that attacking mid is the easiest position to figure out. I’m mostly just concerned about the central midfield issues right now.
 
I'm pretty sure the fine was continuation from our UEFA settlement from last year and we only had to pay a small portion of it, because while we were still over the SQR threshold, we had lowered our ratio from the previous year. Tielemans and Digne's contracts no longer being on our books takes two very large wages out which does really help. The fact that Martinez is staying makes me think that we feel okay in our financial status. Rogers still might get moved, but I don't think we HAVE to move him like we have had to make sales in the past to meet regulations.

Yeah, I understood why they took those guys on free transfers back when Emery first got there, but those guys are always on massive wage bills. Eventually you have to get them off the books if you’re going to settle into a sustainable roster program.
 
Arsenal signed wing Christos Tzolis for Club Brugge for €40 million. He had previously spent 3 seasons at Norwich, making 30 appearances.
 
Another midfield piece looks to fall to Villa. They’re in the final stages of locking up Joao Gomes from Wolves for a reasonable enough price. It’s basically all of the Tielemans money, but he’s a natural box to box replacement and he’s younger … and with less road miles on the tires.
