One of three Defensive signings we have made. We have Struijk in as well as Austrian International CB Michael Svboda in from Venezia, RB Costinha from Olympiacos and our club record signing Croatian International CB Luka Vuskovic from Spurs.

And I dont think Albion are done.

Can't wait until Premier League footie is back.

Kind of surprising in a lot of ways. Relatively little money too. Only one year though, so kind of curious to see if he looks to return to a higher level next year or if he goes full retirement league. Turkish league is kind of a tweener.
 
Ornstein is reporting Rogers to Chelsea for £117m and I am fine with this. That's a stupid amount of money and it's not Arsenal as was the original rumor and him going to Chelsea is beyond hilarious. I do love how so much that all the financial regulations just continue to show that money is only real if you aren't in the big six in which case, none of this matters. What a cool broken system!

The fact of the matter is, he wasn't that good this past season for Villa and at the very least, he was VERY inconsistent. His best performances often involved him being invisible for 80 minutes and then spending 10 minutes as the best player on earth and games where he wasn't good, he was basically a liability for the full 90. He and Palmer make sense together as tens as Palmer likes to operate on the right side while Rogers is much more effective on the left, but what happens with Fernandez, Neto, etc? Still think Chelsea's issues are much bigger on the defensive side.

He flirted with MLS but I don’t think he was ready to commit to the schedule coming off a full EPL season followed by a World Cup. A season in Turkey pets him ramps down to MLS nicely.

Yeah, weirdly Rogers kind of got better while getting worse in a lot of ways. He made himself a fixture on the Villa roster by providing relentless pressure followed by aggressive attacks, but once he got established he became a sharper, more productive offensive producer while losing some of that energy up and down the pitch. He’s a proper menace with the ball now, but doesn’t track back like he used to and Villa’s system kind of still needs both out of that attacking midfielder. I’m fine with selling him, especially for that much profit, but I wish he hadn’t gone to Chelsea because they once again are spending ridiculous money on positions they already have covered. It won’t end well. It never does.
 
Looks like Villa are in for Garnacho from Chelsea to boost their pool of wingers. He’s on really high wages and this would be a loan to purchase kind of deal, but I do feel like he’d be a good fit for what Villa ask of their wingers. Apparently he’s mostly been linked to Italian sides before Villa spoke up. I dunno. He’s still so young that I feel like Emery can get him back on track eventually.
 
Arsenal spent all summer pursuing Morgan Rogers but would only go to £80 million, with Villa valuing him at £116 million. When Chelsea met the ask, Villa offered Arsenal a chance to match but they declined.

Bad miss for Arsenal. I really feel like Rogers was a terrific fit for them and they were WAY less likely to screw him up than Chelsea. I know you have to mind your budgets and all, but I feel like they’ll regret that one.

For Villa, they absolutely had to stick to their ask on that kind of deal. The whole point of moving Rogers was the cash coming in. Otherwise it’s not like they wouldn’t just keep him. He was under contract for 4 more years.

Apparently the plan is to loan him this year with an agreed purchase price next summer. That allows the two teams to avoid that dumb player swap provision in the FFP requirements that would reduce Villa’s credit for selling Rogers because they turned around and bought a Chelsea player. You can apparently avoid that penalty if you wait 45 days, but the window will be closed by then. Thus the work-around of the loan/purchase.

Ooh and the fun detail from the athletic article is that for it to not just be considered a transfer immediately there has to be a reasonable chance for the obligation to buy to not be met, so that means there is absolutely a non zero chance that Emery changes his mind and we have a repeat of Harvey Elliott with a player I hate as much as I hate Jaden Sancho! Maybe there's a chance that his Chelsea experience has humbled him a little bit.

And again, I can see Garnacho being a really good fit if his ego is broken to the point where he’ll actually play in a system. Chelsea are pretty good at cutting a guy down to size. Sometimes too good.
 
Okay, now I'm actually angry. Austin MacPhee to Chelsea. That's just going too far. This is the fault of that Portugal match where Austin was allowed to go full Ronaldo decoy and use the fact that everyone knows how selfish Ronaldo is against his opponent. Set pieces have been such an advantage for us for the past few seasons. I was hoping that nobody would notice, but MacPhee has to be so damn recognizable that eventually someone would realize it.

It really does kind of feel like the second we've almost established we're amongst the best of the league, we're getting stripped for parts. This is going to have to be an impressive Emery performance to repeat last seasons success. Obviously not saying it's not successful if we don't win a European trophy again as this one's tougher, but performing well in the Champions League again and performing as well or better in the league will be difficult. I do at the very least appreciate that we're going to be younger, since that was an OLD squad last year.
 
And Barca added Karim Adeyemi from Dortmund. Watched him play the last few seasons. Last year, he looked oddly ineffective but showed great flahses of talent the prior two seasons. He's just 24 so Barca may be yet able to unlock his full potential.
