The Spanish teams are leaking talent kind of like the NWSL teams did a couple of years ago. Pretty much everybody in NWSL and WSL has added somebody from a Spanish side this summer, even lower budget teams.
 
This one dropped like a bombshell for us Liverpool fans, as their was literally no chatter prior to this announcement.

In a heartbeat, he addresses a big concern in the back. Still would prefer to see us linked to a right back (instead of all these midfielders) but it's a good move.

I hope that works out better than I think it will. I’ve just never looked at Arfsten and seen a guy who can play in Europe, or even an international player.
 
Yeah, that’s just the official announcement. IIRC that Digne transfer has been public for some time. VDC and I have never really been on the same page about that guy. Sounds like Villa are close to completing a deal for Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico to replace Digne. He’s taller, more athletic and most importantly, on much lower wages. He’s also been a pretty deft hand with assists from crosses, which will be needed with Digne gone.
 
And FWIW, Villa’s most important transfer news now that Rogers has been shipped off is that keeper Emi Martinez is settled and happy to return … unlike this time last year. Other than Watkins, he’s Villa’s most important individual player and a BIG reason for their slow start last year was his off season discontentment.
 
Yeah, I was kind of on my own as far as Villa fans before last season on Digne, but he truly was so bad this past season that at least some percentage of the fans have joined my feelings on him to some degree since while he was never that mobile, he truly cannot and will not move faster than a snail at any point. He's also one of those guys who has never committed a foul in their mind no matter how blatantly obvious of a foul it was and that's just a personal pet peeve of mine.
 
Villa has been very busy this window after being basically forced to take last year off. Overall, I'm very happy so far and not JUST because we got rid of Digne. Getting his wages off the books, plus the sales of Tielemans (after the initial emotional blow, the rational part of my brain says we made out like bandits considering his total minutes played in his career and injury history and high wages) and Rogers has allowed us to bring in Manzambi and Gomes who I'm super excited about as well as Garnacho who I am slowly and painfully talking myself into and now Ruggeri as hopefully the backup left back and we will finally allow Maatsen to cook as the youth used to say.

No matter what, I'm glad we are getting back to targeting younger players this window at the very least after being the second oldest squad in the prem last year. Still really wish we hadn't bought Tammy Abraham this winter though, the logic made very little sense at the time and even less now.
 
Yeah, I’m not convinced about Garnacho. He just strikes me as this year’s Sancho project and that went oh, so well. Hopefully I’m wrong, because if nothing else they should be able to turn a profit on him in a couple of years if he can get anything like the mojo he had when he left Man United back. He’s still only 22 after all. Far too young to be written off entirely.

Also, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that Ruggeri is going to end up supplanting Maatsen, which will grind VDC’s gears no end. I’m agnostic on the subject. I only care about getting positive play out of the position.

One thing I do care about is George Hemmings. I’m convinced that he can be a Jacob Ramsey replacement if given the chance at minutes with the first team. Given that they got rid of Rogers and that both McGinn and Buendia are piling up the miles (and years), it’s always best to replace from the youth setup when possible and that kid has game. They’ve already sold off most of that generation of academy players and I’d hate to see the whole group go adrift to other clubs.
 
I'm more positive toward Garnacho than I was for Sancho for sure. A lot of it is that admittedly, I'm a sucker for pace, but theres a really good reason for that. If you can run faster than your opponent, that's a positive thing in almost every sport! I know Garnacho has the physical tools to beat players on the dribble and attack space, but his decision making and execution are lacking. That stuff can be improved. Sancho peaked when he was 19 and stopped trying to improve after that. He has some nice skills and that two touch move he does to get around one defender once per match looks really sweet, but it doesn't work a second time. I'm hoping the year at Chelsea humbled Garnacho enough that he's willing to listen to Emery. He's a lot closer to Rashford as a player than he is to Sancho and Rashford had the best four months of his career playing for us. I also think that a winger like that on the left compliments Maatsen more (let me live in my hope dammit!), because it gives Maatsen the space to come inside where he is a real issue for defenses.
