Tech Thread

@MindzEye and anyone interested in YT Premium

Just wanted to relay a heads up that if you sign up via an iOS device it can be as expensive as $16.99 a month….but if you do it on your chrome browser or whatever, it’s 12.99 a month, or $129 for 12 ($10.83/month).

I have a BlueSky account. But it kind of followed the same pattern as Mastadon. I checked it out for a few days, nothing much seemed to be going on and precious few of the people I follow on Twitter were on and/or active on there.

Now it’s probably been a few weeks at least since the last time I looked at it.

I totally get it....I also signed on to Mastadon and Threads only to ghost them. I guess I'll save the keystrokes this time with BS

Elon’s swallowed Russian propaganda so completely that he doesn’t even recognize a lot of his shit as Russian propaganda, or even pro-Russian commentary. So that’s why he’s not seeing it.

Like, he’s in so deep he probably genuinely thinks “let’s end this war ASAP by giving Russia Crimea and territory in Eastern Ukraine” as a pro-Ukrainian stance.

It's not pro-Ukrainian, but those regions obviously should belong to Russia, and will almost assuredly vote so in their elections this weekend, so why are we continuing to battle?

It's kind of like the old British appeasement where they let Germany have Czechoslovakia in order to prevent further trouble. That ended up fine for all parties I think, right?

so... uh... threads...

Threads blocks searches for 'covid' and vaccines

When users went to Threads to search for content related to “covid” and “long covid,” they were met with a blank screen that showed no search results and a pop-up linking to the website of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

A Meta spokesperson acknowledged that Threads was intentionally blocking the search terms, and said that other terms were being blocked, but declined to provide a list of those. A search by The Post discovered that the words “sex,” “nude,” “gore,” “porn,” “coronavirus,” “vaccines” and “vaccination” are also among blocked words.

So you can’t rule out that it’s for a nefarious purpose. It’s Zuckerberg/meta so that’s always on the table.

But also the threads CEO said when it launched they weren’t really interested in being just like Twitter. They want regular people to come in the platform to talk about normal stuff, and not just descend into a slightly more moderated 4chan screeching stand.

As an occasional threads user who has abandoned Twitter forever, I really don’t need to see any more studies or opinions telling me that vaccines are good. And I could not possibly be less interested in being caught in the cross-fire between evangelical antivaxxers and people who engage them. No thanks. Maybe it’s heavy handed, but I still don’t see a better alternative.

Zuck wants to be twitter without the parts of twitter that actually made twitter good.

So yeah, if you want another platform to see The Rock's work out and diet lifestyle, Threads is fine.

Hmmm I think their vision is a bit more complex than that.

Like, what would you do if you wanted Twitter but without 90% of the nonsense? A place where people can make lifestyle posts (you’re free to care or not) without being overrun by nazis, and other people can discuss serous events, including the war in Ukraine, without being overrun by nazis.

Whether the algorithm and moderation policies will ever lead to that promised land is a fair question.

They made it pretty clear at the time Threads started that they didn't really want the politics but wanted the celeb stuff. I posted quotes at the time.

If that’s what Zuck wants Threads to be…what exactly is the distinction between Threads and Instagram?

Seems like both are serving the exact same audience and purpose.
