The 2017-2018 Training Camp / Pre-Season Thread

As Babs himself admitted, Leivo is a NHLer. I think he'd fit better on Matthew's LW, and also better on Martin's spot (especially when Leivo himself can play pretty feisty and there aren't really many fights in the NHL anymore). At worst, he deserves to play half the season rotating spot with Martin on the 4th line. A Leivo-Moore-Brown 4th line will probably be the most offensive 4th line in the league.

However, Babs clearly doesn't believe in that. And we are where we are.

If we keep Leivo as the 13th F aka pressbox fixture again, he's just rotting in the pressbox. Plus Aaltonen, who plays C and W, and also can play on PK and PP (if really need be) is probably a better 'spare F' than Leivo.

I'd say like Corrado, enough is enough. If Babs isn't gonna play him, Lou should trade him, or even waive him for the good of Leivo's career.

Mike Babcock says cuts will come Monday after he and Lou Lamoriello meet tomorrow at noon.

Leivo kinda sucks. He will be cut and traded.

And then he’ll do nothing with his new team. Unless he’s playing with Crosby or someone.

Carl Grundstrom is on his way back to Sweden. Toronto likes him, but he needs another year to develop.

I guess Grundstrom can't play in the AHL eh? Would have loved to see him develop here with the Marlies
Yeah, the Marlies were not an option, unfortunately. If you're not a free agent in the SHL, and you weren't picked in the first round, the NHL's transfer agreement says they have to be sent back.

On the upside though, unlike Liljegren (or Nylander, when we brought him over), Grundstrom plays for a good SHL team. They also gave him a ton of ice time and opportunity last year, and will most likely do the same this year.

It would be interesting if Sweden decides to take some young players, with higher potential on their Olympic team. In theory he could play in the WJC and Olympics this year.

The guy was top 15 among Swedes in goals last year as an 18 year old. A good year from him, and its not that unrealistic.

Leafs made their final cuts. Aaltonen was the relevant guy to go. Looks like Lievo, Marincin, Rosen and Borgman sticking around.

Liljegren and Fehr still around too for some reason.

Remember that it looked like Hyman got concussed on friday, and I was surprised that he came back into the game.

14 forwards, 10 dmen.

Rosen - Carrick
Borgman - Liljegren
Marincin - Polak

though I do believe Polak isn't even signed, so that's probably 9 dmen.

Yeah, that makes sense. There has to be some injury. Otherwise one of Fehr/Marincin/Leivo would have to go on waivers today. Although Borgman/Rosen could still be sent down without waivers.

Could be, but they assigned Grundstrom back to Sweden already. Maybe they are trying to get him traded, or some assurances on playing time still? Traded to the Knights?

Interesting that Aaltonen gets sent down. I wonder if Eric Fehr's earned himself a spot on the roster. He looked fairly solid whenever I saw him in camp, and the fact that Dermott, Rosen & Borgman can all be sent up and down without waivers this year could permit them to carry 14 forwards (with Leivo as the other extra) instead of eight defenseman.

I suppose there's the unsigned Roman Polak too, but it really doesn't sound like he's fully healthy, and I suspect they'll do with him what they did with Brandon Prust last year---keep him around without a contract until they need him, or he leaves to sign somewhere else.

They have until tomorrow at 5PM to get down to a 23-man roster, so there doesn't necessarily have to be an injury at play here, as they can wait until tomorrow to waive those guys.

Yeah but the player would need to clear waivers before they can be assigned to the minors though and that takes 24 hours. So they would have to go on waivers today.

So it can't be Fehr/Marincin/Leivo as the last cut. It has to be Borgman/Rosen, someone on IR or a trade.

probably means Liljegren back to sweden tbh.
I'm not sure. After all, they've already sent back Grundstrom, but not Liljegren.

My guess would be that they're still just be trying to work out an arrangement with his Swedish league team to either let them keep him in the AHL, or for them to trade his SHL rights to a team that isn't a basket case.

No matter what though, since he's under contract this year in the SHL, they need Rogle's agreement.

I'm not sure that's true.

I've also heard that for the purposes of the 23-man roster, a player is considered off the roster the day they're put on waivers, since one way or another, they'll be gone at the end of the waiver period (claimed by another team, or off to the AHL).

I'd guess that if it was borgman or rosen going down, they'd have just been sent with the rest of them.

They must be trying to work on trades of guys like Marincin, Fehr...maybe even Leivo.
