The 2019-2020 MotherFucking Season Thread

Eh, he could have had hernia surgery when his foot broke and had a similar recovery time.

Crosby was out for exactly 2 months after surgery this year, which is exactly where rielly will be next week.

He's better than Marincin, at least. And unfortunately he's still better than Lilly at this point.

I really had hoped we'd seen him play his last game for this team, though.

Honestly, I'm good getting back all the regulars now. They're going to be playing in the playoffs, and they need to start getting back into it after such a long layoff.

Turned out we ended up needing Ceci after all, as the kids simply aren't ready for any serious NHL duty. Can't see him being brought back though. he's a bottom pair dman looking for second pair money.

Not sure if this was mentioned but Chris Pronger was on spittin chiclits and said he would have been a Leaf had they been willing to include Alex Steen in a deal, but were only willing to include Matt Stajan

This was fairly public knowledge at the time. The offer was kaberle stajan and a 1st. Oilers wanted Steen instead of Stajan. That's a steep price if you ignore that they later traded steen for Lee the bee.

Yeah, that was pretty widely known at the time.

It was when JFJ was our GM and Pronger had just finished his one season in Edmonton before demanding a trade out of there. If I'm remembering correctly, Edmonton's asking price was Steen, Kaberle & a 1st round pick.

JFJ declined. Though to be fair, Kaberle was 27 and coming off a 67-point season, and Steen was 21 and coming off an 18-goal/45-point rookie year.

I think many of us would have shit blasted the leafs for making that deal. Fergie did plenty worse than that.

I'm pretty sure I supported JFJ turning down that deal at the time. In hindsight, it's a good example of how quality always >>> quantity.

Kaberle was a perfectly fine top-pairing offensive defenseman, but Pronger was a generational all-time great who'd just dragged a shitty team to game seven of the Cup final, and dragged two more teams to the finals (and one Cup) after Edmonton traded him away.

That Kaberle was only an effective NHLer for a few more years afterwards, and that senile Cliff dumped Steen for a handful of magic beans a couple of years afterwards definitely makes this one hurt a bit more in hindsight.

When i watch Marner the skillset reminds me of Patrick Kane but i dont see the same mindset on the ice. I see a lack of drive, overhandling of the puck and poor decision making. I think Kane being insulated with the right pros ( Toews) helped his on ice maturity. Marner comes off to me as a bit lazy and immature and i don't see anyone on the team that can hold him in check. I thonk Tavares was supposed to be that guy but he us a robot programmed to play hockey and give dense, obvious, dull hockey statements after games. Im not sure this team has enough of a window to wait for Mitch to mature. I also suspect Mitch might ve one of those ONT kids who is better served in a non hockey market.

Yeah kaberle was always chubby but the dude was straight up fat in his last couple seasons. By the time he got to Boston he was having heart attacks after 30 second shifts.

Pronger was incredible but again... It's hard to find too much fault in not making that trade. If they really felt Steen would be an elite first liner (which he became) and kaberle was a top pair dman (which he was but his career was cut short due to morbid obesity) plus it was either one or two first rounders? Look around the league... Teams don't often get that kind of package for any one elite player. Look at he Kovalchuk deal from Atlanta, for example.
