The Breaking Point

Reimer wouldn't be a bad pickup for Phoenix, if given a summer to work with Burke and a shot at a starting gig.

Its a bummer year for sure. And you know unless you get the number one or two draft pick, its really not worth tanking. Imo. And forget the stink the organization picks up along the way for being lousy.

bernier should be locked up long term. dude's a really good goalie. the weak goal thing is really overstated. look at that goal lundqvist gave up to lose 1-0 to the habs... total stinker. it happens.

with mediocre numbers at least he won't cost top dollar.

still worried that the bad goals are due to him being small.

I think his bad goals are due to him being so nonchalant at times. There have been a few because of his tendency to direct shots into the corners and he fluffs it.

Yeah, but how many times does it happen? It feels like there are so many bad goals and bad games that we get from Bernier.

And if we commit ourselves to $5M per year, and it turns out he can't cut it, how do we get rid of that contract?

I think the slump is getting to just about everyone. Bernier was very good last year, but then went down to the much feared groin strain, tear etc... He might not be the same yet. Jonathan Quick had major surgery and seems to be back. Goalies are tricky, best to have a lot of them in the system. I think straying away from tying yourself up to a long term goalie contract might be a good move
now.

Lundqvist doesn't do that as often. Bernier has had one stinker goal in at least nine of the last ten games he's started.
And let's not forget how shitty he got near the end of last season, just before he was injured. Maybe it was part of the total team collapse, but it was a collapse... again.
So at this point, I question signing him long term. He's going to ask for big money due to solid numbers for most of his time here, and he'll get that from somebody. But with his groin injury, and multiple late season collapses, along with much more regular stinker goals than Lundqvist, or Quick, or any other top goalie lets in, now is the time to be cautious.
By the same token, when Bernier went down to injury, and Reimer was given that golden opportunity to earn his starting job back, he failed miserably. So trading Bernier while keeping Reimer isn't going to be the best for our goaltending, but it will be the best for the good of the team. Bernier can net us some excellent trade value, and we can sign Nabokov to backup Reimer, while we try to get someone better later. In the meantime, with the team not giving up 50+ shots a game anymore, we can get away with not having the better of our two goalies for a little while.
We have two very good backup goalies who've both shown they can't take the pressure. One of them is up for a big payday, and I think now is the best time to trade him, based on that.

there's a bit of an issue on this board with people labeling goals that maybe could have been stopped with bad goals.

there's a difference.

as for lundqvist.. he allows softies all the time. we've seen plenty of them over the years against hte leafs.
