Yeah, it's a weird case where as much as a team like Vegas needs to build through the draft, NYI also needs some good young talent too. Unless if they use that money savings to ensure that Tavares stays around, gonna be tough on them to lose that first round pick.

Well, I agree, it is short sighted, but it may be an attempt to get competitive for this season, so that they can keep Tavares.

Just guessing cause yes, you are right, it makes little sense for the Isles.

Wow, so Anaheim is going to give up Theodore a 1st and a 2nd all so they didn't have ask Bieksa to waive his NMC or buy him out? You have to assume they are moving a dman at some point either way.

Vegas is going to make out like bandits.
 
Also apparently they are getting a 1st and a prospect out of Columbus to not take Jack Johnson. GMs are dumb.

I was wondering if she actually meant "combination of a 2018 first/2017 second/third" and it somehow autocorrected to Theodore. Otherwise that's just far too expensive.
 
Yeah I realized you meant a combination. I just didn't think Theodore would be involved. So they actually might use Theodore+ to protect Vatanen or Manson. Wow.

Yeah, Stephens did suggest Theodore and picks were a possibility. They're going to have quite a stash of futures when they're done if that's the case.
 
So dumb. Just sack up and move Vatanen like they are going to do anyway, and waive Bieksa.

Yeah, I really don't understand Anaheim's approach to the expansion draft. Bieksa probably would have waived, and if not, then you buy out the final year of his contract. It's not like he's even good anymore, and with young defensemen like Manson, Theodore & Montour coming up, they can easily live without him.

Then, deal Vatanen (who you can also live without due to the aforementioned young defensemen) for a solid return prior to the expansion draft, and they would have been all set.

The stupidity is mind boggling. Never has the important of high picks been more apparent and teams are dumping them to keep their 3rd lines in tact.

Assuming these rumours are true They're also setting up McPhee to build a contender in the next 3-5 years. Vegas will be shit the first two years which should give them 2-3 high end pieces (depending on. How they make out this year) and then tons of depth from all the picks they're adding.
 
but yeah it boggles my mind that so many gms seem to think there's no at least neutral value (if not negative) contracts on their team that should be easily replaceable without sacrificing good picks.
 
It seems to be GM's in general really over-value their players, undervalue the picks (or maybe 2017 class is REALLY, REALLY bad?) and not very creative in looking at other options like trades with 3rd party teams to find an 'out' ... instead they just cough up their picks to LVG
