The Expansion Draft

Trade freeze is over; exciting few days ahead. Want to see the Leafs add a top 4 D and a veteran forward who can play the top 9

I thought Carolina was already loaded on defense?

I guess maybe they're lacking right-handed defensemen?

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what Vegas gets for TVR. Should give a reasonable idea what they'd be asking for Miller.

Hanifin, Faulk, Pesce, Slavin, TVR .... wonder if one of the previous top-4 is the new odd man out...

So they'd have exposed better players than Dumba and Manson?

If they weren't able to cut a deal, they buy out Bieksa and would have protected Manson and lost Vatanen. Vegas though, appears firmly fixated on the future and preferred Shea Theodore to that outcome.

Certainly wouldn't have been worse players or they'd have protected these two.

I don't think you're fully thinking their position through.

This all came down to lose Vatanen or trade Theodore. Manson was never on the table.

agreed.

and I really don't care for any of these depth guys.

legit top-4 guys like demers and vatanen interest me, but even then that's a bit of a capitulation to not getting a top dog.

Doubtful one of the top-4 is out... we just need TVR to be 3rd pair right side... it's the Ryan Murphy-avoidance plan.

Yeah, between Dermott, Carrick, the Swedes, Marincin, Marchenko and likely bringing back Hunwick we have plenty of depth, kinda talented depth at that.

Need a reliable big minute guy.

Could see JVR heading to the Canes to play with his brother. Lots of interesting defencemen on the Hurricanes.

I don't see how adding an almost 30-year old pending FA makes any sense for the Canes given their core.

Actually, it doesn't make a shred of sense.

Meh, they need to make the playoffs and have spent the last few years loading up on young assets. I could see them wanting to cash in on some of them to get some W's and reignite that fan base. The TVR deal makes one of their young D expendable for help up front and pairing him with his brother greatly increases their chances of signing JVR long-term.

The only thing that's going to reignite that fanbase is if they put together a sustainably good team.

That's why Francis has been following the same patient, build-through-youth approach that the Leafs have. That's why they parted ways with Eric Staal.

I just can't see them pulling a U-turn on that strategy now to trade for pending UFA JVR, and then signing 29 year-old JVR to a hefty long-term deal.

Exactly. JVR doesn't fit there for the many of the same reasons he doesn't fit here.

And why give up a young and controllable asset for a season of JVR? Especially if they have no intention of re-signing him. Unless the play is to use him as deadline rental bait, but I can't see Francis going down that road given the deadline market in the past few seasons.

So yeah, I still don't see how JVR to the Canes make any sense.

I will say this though, if Darling provides them with league average or better goaltending, I'd expect the Canes to make the playoffs this year.
