The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

He likes the Argos... it's like he is a 90 yesr old from the dirty shwa

No way.

There is not a single living human being under the age of 60 that likes the Argos.

Marner probably just pretends because MLSE was finally convinced to buy the team, and they sign Mitch’s cheques.

Thought Hollowell looked much better last game, even aside from the sweet assist.

I thought that he looked fine-ish overall, but he looked terrible on SJ's goal sequence. It displayed everything that is wrong with him as a defender at the NHL level imo. Lost his footing really easy in half of a physical challenge in front by Couture, then got up and was a step slow and weak in cutting off Couture behind the net. Mete capped that by going for a walk and leaving Nieto alone in front, but he was trying to cover up (poorly, granted) for Hollowell's bad sequence.

I think that's all we're going to get out of him tbh. A competentish puck mover with good mobility who reads the game a step slow in the defensive end and lacks the physical tools to contain NHL forwards. He and Mete are a terrible pairing together, which doesn't help matters at all.

Remember too, he and Mete are the same age. This isn't a 21 yr old kid with development runway in front of him.

At the same time, we're winning, that pair is a plus in the goals ledger so far, his teammates love him, and hey its nice to give the homegrown guy a real shot before inevitably moving on from him.

Also I believe Mete was reasonably competent when paired up with an NHL defender. Even Kral was fine beyond one terrible gaff.

I blame mete for that one. Forcing the guy wide behind the net is fine. That should have never been a scoring chance.

Should have been an easy pin before the play ever got to the point Mete could make a stupid decision. You want to get the inside line on the forward there and push him towards the corner and back to the point being his only play. It's not like Couture had momentum or anything, he started from a standstill and just beat Mac to the spot he wanted.

i mean really it should have been a tripping penalty on Couture.

I’m not so high on Hollowell but I don’t think that play is the reason he’s not an NHLer.

Mete though…

Mete is shit, you'll never see me defend him. No IQ away from the puck. He defends like people accuse Rielly of defending.

But I very much disagree on your assessment of Hollowell on that play. Hits the deck super, super easy (that's never going to get called as a trip, ever. No puck possession, just a hack at the puck in his skates..if you call that slash, there's 15 more to call before the game is over). Gets up and gets beat by Couture from a standstill (doesn't try to angle him at all, goes right at his chest), giving him a free trip around the net with no resistance. I see soft, small, and slow to react without a functioning clue about what he's trying to do there. The amount of seperation Couture is able to create there without doing anything to actually work hard for it is crazy. One cross over and goes where he wants with no resistance.

It really comes down to whether you think he was tripped, or lost a physical battle there. Ultimately that is what created the separation. After that Hollowell played it really well. He closed the gap, pressured the puck and tried to cut Couture off, like you say he should have. He was just a step slow getting there.

But either way, yeah, he's definitely has a bad combo of skating and size for the NHL. That's the big weakness. If you are that small you gotta skate like Spurgeon. Its the hockey IQ that has gotten him this far. He's the anti-Mete, all brain, no physical tools.

These are guys who are what, 9th/10th, maybe even 11th in our depth chart now though, so we should expect some mistakes. I think most of them would still make the bottom of other rosters pretty easily.

Yeah. We're definitely scraping the bottom of our barrel, and it's a deeper barrel than most other teams have.

If we look at the chart to start the season

Rielly
Muzzin
Brodie
Gio
Lilly
Sandin
Holl
Benn
Mete

That's 9 deep with NHL experience before we start looking at inexperienced guys like Kral & Hollowell.

I'm good with Benn, Mete, and Hollowell as 7th and later dmen and fill ins.

I think most teams have guys like that as their #4 and are happy with them.
