The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

The point regarding Sandin getting bumped is kind of a meh point. Moving Gio down to that 3rd pairing probably leads to a better 2 way shit kicking of lighter competition than Sandin was doing and McCabe is probably better at the heavy lifting than 70 yr old Gio is as well, so you're improving 2 pairings with the same move though the surface level analytics will disagree because they're probably over valuing Ras.

I also don't think we've emptied the chamber here if we want a middle 6W type guy. There's a few guys potentially out there who would be upgrades that we have the assets for, especially if you include Sandin as an asset. Garland, Crouse, Tippett, Jenner, Schmaltz are all interesting on one level or another.

I think the other side of this is that Brodie is probably damn near as good as Ekholm...so we kind of already have our Ekholm shut down guy. We wanted/needed a LHD that could run with him on that pairing. McCabe brings something to the pairing that Brodie doesn't as well with his general disregard for human life.
yeah he is our Muzz replacement. which makes me happy overall.

presto and I have been consistently banging that drum, that if Muzz is truly dead, we need someone who can replace his match-up capabilities, ideally in a pairing with TJ. I preferred Ekholm but given the value at play here I am content. now I just hope McCabe is as good or better than Muzz. seems to have the anger and cross-checking pieces down at least.

am I out to lunch for thinking that Sandin could be the main feature in a Crouse package?

I mean we also added 3 forwards that have scored 36 goals this year to replace ZAR, Holmberg and Anderson/Malgin/Robertson that had 16.

The numbers were/are pretty clear that the bottom 6 needed work and the top 6 was fine as is, even before ROR.

Goals from top 6 forwards this season (not including deadline moves):

Toronto: 139 (Matthews-Marner-Nylander-JT-Bunting-Jarnkrok)
Tampa: 131
Boston: 129
Devils: 123 (Not including Meier)
Rangers: 114 (Not including Tarasenko)
Canes: 104

Our top 6 even before ROR was one of if not the best in the league. Our bottom 6 was average at best before all of those moves.

Good news is... I don't think Leafs will have much of a choice but to trade Raz, whether it's now or this summer. He wasn't happy being firmly in the 3rd pair before and he certainly isn't happier today. He will ask for a trade if he hasn't already so this might increase Kyle's urgency to get something done.

Sucks because people here don't value him, and he's actually really good.

But circumstances are such that it seems unlikely he'll play, so between the pressbox and a trade for some good scorer, the choice is obvious. Clearly Dubie's moves have been heading in this direction.

Kyle was just asked if he's done and he answered by rambling for an hour about the guys going to a Springsteen concert tonight.

Tldr: sounds like he's not done

I like how fucking strong this McCabe guy holds up defensively in all these nerdy charts despite getting ridiculously tough usage on an absolutely tire fire team. I know that these models don't really put enough weight on usage so I'm very happy to see that. Hope his play can translate well to a new system.
Where you will be playing him I think he'll do just fine. Likely on the second pairing. If third even better.

Rielly - Brodie
McCabe - Holl
Gio - Liljegren
Sandin - Timmins
Benn
Honestly I’m not loving it from the mobility standpoint. I hope McCabe is at least as good as Sandin in that regard. I don’t know him well enough to know.

And is he actually related to Bryan? He looks just like him.

I guess in theory, McCabe could play the right side and if they move on from Holl (either to clear salary before this year’s deadline or in the off-season), that still potentially leaves Sandin a spot in the top-6.

Dunno that it’ll work out like that though. Especially since that’s mean Lilly permanently relegated to the bottom pair.

So yeah, he’s probably gone. So hopefully he has decent trade value around the league.
