The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

So…Leafs posted a video of the guys in the dressing room after the game, ready to award the game belt to their choice of player of the game. They gave it to Simmonds last game, presumably because it was maybe his last as a Leaf? Okay. So Tavares gets to award it on his behalf since he’s gone.

I’m thinking it has to be to Sammy, and Tavares starts out talking about Sammy, but then he gives the belt to…Schenn? In a game where the D gave up 50 shots, the best player of the game was Schenn?

This has nothing to do with Dubie or Keefe. And I don’t think Tavares has any brain damage from the knee to the head a couple years ago. So what in the actual fuck? Are we maybe missing something here? If the players in the room value him that much, are we off in underestimating the “toughness/grit” quality and its actual unmeasurable on-ice impact?

I think they gave it to him because he was forced into the lineup at the last second and didn't even get pre-game warmup.

The player's are usually the last to the party when it comes to changing anything about the game. Most of them would still want to have old school enforcers on their team to "keep the other guys honest" and all that cliche shit.

How does it not go to Sammy in any event? That feels like a major snub. Yes, Tavares mentions that Schenn only found out he was playing an hour before game time but…who gives a fuck?

your robot captain crush, apparently
I think it seems to indicate the players care a lot more about the grit quality than we do, and there’s a good argument to be made that maybe they know better. I just find that video alarming and fascinating at the same time.

my presumption is that the majority of NHL players are kinda dumb. so I don't think that they necessarily know better.

and again, I think you're overreading 'grit' into this one and underrepresenting the last minute nature of his inclusion in the lineup (remember he was out doing extra work earlier that morning)

I think they’re dumb about math, finance, and other subjects, but gotta trust they’re smart at hockey.

Maybe the ritual is just bullshit and they don’t really give it to the guy who plays best, but it was a weird one.
