The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

To play ahead of him or Sandin?

This is a repeat of the same problem unless they plan to land Josi or Fox or someone else we absolutely know is better. Which they won’t because no one is trading guys like that.

So why not play our kids instead of hoping some outsider who is just ok will be better? I really don’t get it.
Well I think Leafs need to add an actual impact D. Not Bush crap. I agree with you in that we can't take minutes from them. We are really thin though on the right side even with Lilly back

That’s the craziest part of this whole Muzzin fiasco. We didn’t even need to replace him! We needed his spot for a kid to step into.

Truly outrageous.
It's a fine thesis and I get it, but they need to play better than they have back there with and without Muzzin in the lineup. It's early but they have given up too much and haven't provided enough offensively.

Don’t you think they would be if we had another $6m+ forward up there and no Muzz around?

What's 6m though? Do you lock yourself into one of those albatross UFA deals? Where you do you find this mythical 6m dollar player that provides good value? You said it yourself.. Teams don't typically give up the good ones.

I turned on my radio today because I hate myself. Carlo and some other dude were going on about the Leafs d being shit. And that it's a fact that cannot be debated. And how expecting Liljegren to be a "saviour" is dumb since he's not even a top 4 d. This made me very mad and angry and fuels me to aggressively want the Leafs to play better and dominate again.

But then the Leafs constantly disappoint and these dummies are constantly proven "right" even when they're somehow horrendously wrong about everything. It's maddening.

well yeah, when the team loses they can say it was because of whatever they want because, well, the team lost so they must be right.

Pretty sure they could find a good way to spend that money on an F. Instead of paying Muzz that money and getting F’ed.

Carlo made a strange comment last year about Lilly being the 7th D showing they lack depth. He hates him.

Yep, the progression is going to be funny to watch

- You have terrible depth if Timmy is your #7
- Your blueline is bad, he's not a top 4
- Your blueline is terrible if Timmy is on your top pairing playing 23 minutes a game
- What are the Norris voters thinking? (no, I do not believe Timmy will win a Norris, but wouldn't be shocked if he received Norris votes one day)

I find that whenever the Leafs are looking bad defensively people tend to forget about team defence and our forwards.

We've been seeing lackadaisical play, it's obvious, so don't be surprised that there isn't enough defensive effort from our forwards who all seem to like to skate up the the opposing blueline as fast as they can.

...there's no doubt that without Muzzin and Lilly we are hurting, there's also no doubt that our top 6 has not been as responsible as they can be,

2 goals against came off breakaways that started at the offensive blueline, and the other two came on the PK.

Not typically what you would blame on "bad defense".

Leafs twitter's fascination with #5-6 defenders on terrible defensive teams will never cease to amaze me.

There isn't a single physical 6'2+ piece of shit defender in the league that they don't want here playing 20 minutes a game.

The worst thing I can say about the Leafs d is that they don't have an elite minute eating #1. It sucks and is unfortunate but it's not like they can grab one out of thin air. The Leafs haven't struggled this year because their #6 d is shit.

Untrue, bottom feeders like Sharks, Habs, Yotes have relentlessly attacked the Leafs number 7 dman on their way to victory

Yeah, they could use a Hedman. But so could 31 other teams. Most good teams make due with specialists who are real gud at their specialty to do what elite #1's do. The only guys who really can do everything are Hedman, McAvoy, Ekblad, Slavvin and even when you get to Slavvin, you're already starting to see drop off in offensive play driving from the other 3. Ekblad appears broken, so really you have two guys and one of them is 32. You're basically looking for a unicorn. Our set up before Muzzin fell apart is pretty common on good teams, a plus to elite offensive play driver on one pairing with a pair of above average veteran shut down guys on another taking the heavies.

If you start looking at who may be available on teams that know they are terrible the list isn't long.

Adam Larsson, Tyler Myers, Gavrikov

I mean Makar is a clear, clear step up from Mo offensively, but is he any better or even close defensively?

As you note, Hedmans and McAvoy's are the exception, not the rule.

Makar is probably in that tier but yeah, it's rare and you're not gonna find out outside of drafting them. No point in dreaming about it. Depth-wise their d is awesome and honestly still doesn't even look that bad without two of their top 4 d. Now Muzzin may be dead and may never return so that could be an issue but they have the horses the make up a fully functionally adequate d.

But going into the playoffs I still look to add a shutdown type in the mold of the Bruins Lindholm addition + a 2nd line forward. Can trade Kerf's salary out and if Muzzin is dead they can fit both under the cap. Idk if anyone will be available on d that interests me though. Last year felt like an outlier in terms of the number of options. I wouldn't add just any ol' d. It's gotta be an upgrade and someone who adds a dynamic that they can use back there. Adding another middling 4/5 d does nothing for me. Big game hunting only pls.
