The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

If you start looking at who may be available on teams that know they are terrible the list isn't long.

Adam Larsson, Tyler Myers, Gavrikov

Yeah, I took a look last night. I think the way is to pick a kid in their mid 20's and just pay the price.

Ride the kids until the deadline to see if Sandin/Lilly are the droids that we're looking for. If we have to package Sandin + 1st + prospects to get a long term answer on the matchup pair, so be it.

I genuinely believe Liljegren is the answer. But Brodie is getting older, Muzzin may be dead and Raz may be good but just good. Adding a longer term solidified solution back there (if one is available) might be the move.

There’s no dman out there available for trade that I’d want to pay for to play instead of Sandin and Lilly.

Save all the capital - prospect and monetary - for the forwards. That’s ironically our only issue (since everyone thinks of us as an offensive juggernaut).

Makar is probably in that tier but yeah, it's rare and you're not gonna find out outside of drafting them. No point in dreaming about it. Depth-wise their d is awesome and honestly still doesn't even look that bad without two of their top 4 d. Now Muzzin may be dead and may never return so that could be an issue but they have the horses the make up a fully functionally adequate d.

But going into the playoffs I still look to add a shutdown type in the mold of the Bruins Lindholm addition + a 2nd line forward. Can trade Kerf's salary out and if Muzzin is dead they can fit both under the cap. Idk if anyone will be available on d that interests me though. Last year felt like an outlier in terms of the number of options. I wouldn't add just any ol' d. It's gotta be an upgrade and someone who adds a dynamic that they can use back there. Adding another middling 4/5 d does nothing for me. Big game hunting only pls.

Once we see what Sandin/Lilly are this year I think the picture gets clearer. Is Brodie-Lilly a functioning shut down pairing? Lilly tutored for that role in the AHL as a 20-21 yr old. Heavies in the NHL are obviously different than heavies in the AHL, but he wouldn't be the first young defender to take to them well. Can Rielly-Sandin function as a thing? Dunno. Can Gio play further up the lineup with good results at his age? Gio-Brodie was an elite pairing a few years back, can they handle a portion of the heavy lifting together?

We're probably lacking what Muzzin was able to do for us 2+ years ago, and won't find it in house, but I'm not convinced that the bones of a very good blueline aren't here already and just needs some tinkering and patience. I don't trust Keefe to not just continue trying to fix the problem by throwing Justin Holl at it though.

Brodie-Lilly in heavies is something I really, really want to see for 20 games.

Raz's nerdies have taken a tumble lately getting some toughs and he has been playing LD so I can't blame the RD thing. Really can't wait till Timmy is back because I can't help but think Holl is the main cause there (although Raz clearly hasn't been great himself). I want to see Keefe ride Raz-Timmy with some tough usage.

I really don't think the problem with this team right now is personnel. Other than only having one NHL goalie of course.

There are things I would do differently, but on paper this team is more than good enough, almost all around.

We need to give Lilly & Sandin real roles and see what they do in them. Colorado's top 4 in the playoffs were 23, 26, 20, & 23. I don't expect Makar from either, but there's definitely top 4 talent in both our kids. Growth isn't linear, it comes in fits and starts.

Team is great, but having some of their kids take the next step may be the difference between being great and cup favorites. And the only way to do that is to play the shit out of all of them. Find out what you have, and reevaluate your needs come deadline.

We will have to see if New Jersey is out of it at the deadline or not.

Severson/Graves/wood/tatar/Haula all on expiring deals.

I wouldn't hate a Larsson deal as it looks like he is still logging ~21 min a night

Keefe tomorrow:

I want Holl shot out of a cannon... and point that cannon towards vancouver and see if they will send us back Luke Schenn.

Then have a rotating cast of Schenn, Benn and Mete on the bottom pair with Gio.

Reilly Lilly
Sandin Brodie
Gio Schenn/Mete, Benn

Problem Solved. Bring in Muzzin in the second round.

Luke Schenn is significantly worse than Justin Holl.

If Luke Schenn was playing on our shutdown pairing, you would hate him with the burning intensity of 1000 suns.

The problem with Justin Holl is that he's a #5-6 RHD being played like a heavy matchup shutdown D, and he's not. Muzzin carried him to good results for a while but without non busted Muzz, he is what he is.
