"score early and coast"

yup

I don't think it means what you think it means.

It means that we've been one of the best in the league at getting a lead early and holding it. Hes using the word coast, I would use the word cruise. Its "boring" hockey in that there is little drama of lead changes, comebacks, etc.

That's a great chart if you are betting on hockey, but I feel like I'd like to be closer to the "win ugly" column.

Not sure why. In this case "win ugly" means more come from behind wins, more blown leads that you pull out in the end, etc.

This chart is entirely about how wild the individual games are. Lead changes, etc.

If you were building a style of play from scratch, I think you would start with "we should score first and never give up the lead" as a core principle.

Especially if you then constructed a roster that has the firepower to come back from more or less any deficit. Would seem to be pretty ideal to me.

TIL FI can't read charts. Most of the best teams are in the "Score Early and Coast" because you know, getting an early lead in hockey is the best way to win games.

“Score early and coast” is definitely a shitty description if it’s supposed to be a positive thing. It conjures up an image of running out to an early lead, and then sitting back and getting filled in the rest of the way.

Though that is pretty much what the Leafs have been doing in a couple of their recent games.

Yeah, it's a bad description, 100%. The Leafs and Penguins are getting leads early and keeping them all game without wild swings in expected point share (win/loss% within the game). That's absolutely ideal and the opposite of what some here are thinking. It's the "win ugly" group that are doing that, getting leads and then losing said leads (leading to wild, entertaining swings in expected points within the game).

The Leafs are doing exactly what we want them to be doing, grabbing a game by throat early and not letting their opponent up for air. It's just hard for us to realize this because we've played so few games recently and we've pissed away leads in 2 of the 3, and choked away a tied game in the 3rd despite dominating play....and recency bias is a motherfucker.
