The Fucking Season Thread - Redemption Tour '22

To each his own. I think there's good stuff in every genre, and while Biebs and his ilk aren't really my thing, I think he's put out at least some stuff that I find quality. I don't really get the concept of preferring not to discover something good just because of some prejudgment (why would you not even want to try to see why he's so popular?), but again, whatever works for you.

Funny enough, I don’t even have much of a prejudgment against the guy. Maybe initially, when he was a tween heartthrob, but I’ve got nothing against him these days.

I don’t even really know much about him or his personal life tbh, since I avoid celebrity news like the plague.

I just lost interest in keeping up with modern music somewhere along the way a good long while ago. And, if I’m on my own, I rarely listen to music of any kind.

Actually, I'm the exact same. I record and fast forward through the Grammy's and other music awards the last 5 years or so, and I swear I recognize maybe just a couple of the performers. But I watch to see what's popular and if I can find anything new that's good, and for me, the modern stuff is almost uniformly dreadful. However, if I do catch a good song or identify a new singer that I think is talented, I get pretty excited to check out their other stuff and maybe go down a new trail that has some good stuff that I like that I didn't know about.

I think it's worth testing out a few minutes here and there to find new stuff, rather than just keep re-consuming old stuff. And this comes from a guy who loves to reexperience all the good stuff of the past over and over.

That said, I can't agree on the celebrity news stuff. I'm into that, but only with respect to what I consider actual celebrities, like actors and those singers that I know, not reality clowns and kardashiyucks. But my career is intertwined with film and tv, so that's probably part of it, yet I've always like the behind the scenes stuff, so I'd likely be into it anyway.

Did you just try to come off as open-minded?

I have a somewhat open mind about pop - I like some good original sounds like Billie, Lorde, Drake - but I can't say anything from Biebs has ever broken through into my world, except for that awful Latin song.

In fairness, I do think of a lot of the talent that these guys have is muzzled with boring, unimaginative formulaic songs that sell to a wider audience. But no doubt they are super talents.

Yep 100%. Like John Mayer has some of the most derivative pop songs of the last few decades, but is actually one of the best guitar players in the word. And Miley Cyrus has some covers of Soundgarden and Metallica... her voice is incredible.

But so much of pop music today is vanilla and doesn't progress music. I like a bunch of Biebs songs, but for the biggest artist of this era he doesn't have a Hey Jude or Thriller or whatever.

It's funny, I think Miley's voice is so unbelievably grating. It kills me.

As far as the females go, I think Pink has the best pipes, and Adele obviously, but very different styles.

Billie is the shit.
I can't really get behind her. I like a couple of her songs, but for the most part, she has no actual voice. It's mindblowing to me that this kid has gotten to the heights she's reached while just softly moaning or whispering in all her songs.

She has that sort of twang to her voice, some accent or something which I find distracting, and then when she hits the higher notes, I can almost feel the strain on her voice buzzing through my ears.

Just to be clear, I don’t fully endorse Justin Bieber or all his songs. That song Intentions I mentioned is one of the few I think are good and meaningful.

the most talented musicians in this day and age are rarely also the most successful.
