The Fucking Season Thread - Redemption Tour '22

zeke is still doing this...now it's just over on HF boards. One poor fella is all tied up in knots arguing that if the season ended today the leafs win the pres. trophy.

I also keep them updated here in this thread btw.

I just call them Pts% now though.

Is this article about offersheets.
No. The only thing I've read about offersheets in 6 months is people whining about it on this board. #NonIssue

This is an interesting tidbit I wasn't aware of (though it's probably been discussed before):

Keefe, who coached Bunting when he was a teenager in the Soo, has determined that Bunting is “a guy we just need to stay on, in terms of video and talking to him and reassuring him.”

Probably won't be able to, but even if we could afford him, I'm not willing to gamble on some $3M-$4M multi year deal just because he was able to stay healthy for one season.

he's an RFA. Leafs have some leverage. Plus his bestie is here for another year.

they almost made it to the end without mentioning it, but snuck in that the Leafs may not be able to afford Kase next year
It's crazy talk with the cap going up so much next year, huh? I mean we haven't lost anybody the last couple of years because we couldn't afford them under the cap, as long as you pretend Zach Hyman, Andreas Johnsson, Kasperi Kapanen and Patrick Marleau + 1st Round Pick don't exist.

as a fan would you rather the media focus on eternal cap problems than discuss the team on the ice?

Years ago when we talked about team building in a cap environment, I remember a bunch of us coming to the conclusion that the best way to build under the cap was to lock up only elite players to big money and term -- never middling players. There was the acknowledgement that of course, that will result in losing "good players" ever year but that was OK and still the best method.

Dubas pretty much did exactly what we all talked about. And every year, he seems to find depth for cheap and the last two seasons have been the two best years by win % in Leafs history. From a building perspective I have no issues (save for maybe that ugly trade deadline last year) - core 4 needs to all show up when it matters now.

The Marner's, Matthews, Nylander's, etc. are underpaid compared to the kinda value they bring to teams. That middle class tho can get overvalued real quick and Dubas has proven he can replace the middle class with near league minimum guys who bring the value of a middle class player.

If Kase is another casualty, it's not a big deal. He's incredible value at his current cap hit, but if we're talking 3-4m I'm no longer much of a fan. Same deal as Kapanen at the time. The Leafs SHOULD theoretically have some Dubas picks on ELCs ready to enter the league in the next year or 2 too so it's not a big deal to lose another middle class dude. Leafs will just replace him with a player just as good for far cheaper. He does it all the time.

that being said I could see them preferring to pay Kase over Kerfoot. Definitely over Ritchie.

Once you have Matthews/Marner and Tavares/Nylander, you're going to find cheapish LWs who know they're going to get to play with either of those and boost their career. This is how it's going to go. It's going to be the same thing when Bunting's contract is up, that's OK.

sounds familiar!
