The ****ing Pre-Season/Training Camp Thread (2019/20)

There should be a big push offensively from the back end. Ceci, Barrie and Sandin love to jump in the play.

I expect an increase in the GF category just from the increased puck movement

The people who are still squawking about the Leafs having an awful blueline strike me as lazy pundits recycling old storylines.

I totally get focusing attention on the defense when Hainsey & Zaitsev are mainstays in your top-4, and your only right-handed defensemen are Zaitsev & Ozhiganov (though a lot of analysts still criminally underrated Rielly & Gardiner).

But when a team's three best defensemen are Rielly, Barrie & Muzzin, and we've also got Dermott & Sandin as young up-and-comers? I don't see how you can credibly still paint the defense core as a problem that needs to be fixed.

It's the Larry Murphy Sucks world with the Leafs. I'm not wild about Rielly's defensive game but it gets totally overstated by many by ignoring how good he is up the ice. Leafs fans seem to get completely crazy about a blueliner making a mistake. Look no further than Schmaltz's game last night. One ugly turnover and he sucks.

The Kaskisuo recall was the writing on the wall, but now it's official.

The Leafs have officially released Neuvirth from his PTO.

They need to do something. Hopefully someone pulls a Leafs this year.

I'm not hopeful.

I had a look through team rosters around the league on Capfriendly the other day, and there's not much out there in terms of teams with multiple waiver-eligible goalies fighting for their backup position. There's:

Laurent Broissoit/Eric Comrie in Winnipeg
Louie Domingue in Tampa (who's already cleared waivers)
Jonathan Bernier/Calvin Pickard in Detroit
James Reimer/Anton Forsberg in Carolina
Anthony Stolarz/Ryan Miller in Anaheim
Malcom Subban/Garret Sparks (lol) in Vegas

...and that's about it. And also keep in mind that the Leafs need a backup who's right around the NHL minimum salary.

The complication is that you want Woll and Scott to both get lots of games in too.

I'm kind of expecting that one of those two guys is going to end up with the Growlers in the ECHL. In an ideal world, I bet their plan was probably to have Neuvirth as the NHL backup, then have a pair of goalie platoons, with Woll/Hutchinson with the Marlies and Scott/Kaskisuo with the Growlers.

Broissoit was solid last year. He would be someone I would look at if he hit the waiver wire

Yeah, I think the right play is to just bite the bullet and roll with Hutch as our backup and hope one of the kids emerges as a legit 3rd stringer this season.

Knocking on carolina, Anaheim, or Vegas's door right now might make sense.

While he'd be a definite improvement over what we have most likely, it'd gross me the hell out to see Ryan Miller in a Leaf jersey.

Fuck that guy. Beating the shit out of him is the best thing Jonathan Bernier's ever done in his NHL career.

Brossoit is really meh (small sample monster last year scares me, it was the best performance of his career at any level) and makes 1.225M this year so he's really not an option imo.

Anton Forsberg is interesting to me, I've always had a soft spot for him. Was legit good in the SHL as a 21 yr old, a legit top tier starting in the AHL, and only 75K more expensive than Hutch so he can probably be fit into our cap situation. Has legitimately carried a starters workload at well above average performance levels in the AHL, so if Freddy actually got hurt he might be the kind of guy who can give average or better performance for stretches as a starter.

Younger and better than Hutch imo, so there's the chance that he's a legit option for 20-30 starts a year. Definitely worth finding out if he gets cut in Carolina.
