The Leafs' goaltending situation / Leafs pursuing Georgiev

Various 1B/Backup options

Crawford with retained salary
Raantta with some sort of retention/salary going back after Kuemper gets back from injury
DeSmith
Cam Talbot if Calgary falls out of the playoff race before the deadline
Aaron Dell
Anders Nilsson

Yeah, there aren't a whole lot of appealing options in-season this year. You covered pretty much all of them.

If we're keeping Freddie and Lehner's not available, Crawford does have some appeal purely as a rental this season. Average-ish numbers this year and last, so he'd be a decent upgrade on Hutchinson at least. Also comes with a Cup and plenty of playoff experience on his resume.

You'd have to think he'd be fairly cheap to acquire too. But Chicago would have to take back Ceci and/or retain money on Crawford to make it work.

.909 is what it is. 2 of the last 3 years he's been bad. He's 32 with an albatross of a contract.

What do you do with him? You suck it up and pay him, because no one else wants that contract.

Or you bribe someone to take him. Blah.

Anyway, Leafs may be able to get one of Detroit’s goalies. That or like everyone has discussed one of Chicago’s. Crawford has actually looked pretty good this season the few times I’ve seen him. He wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize for a playoff run. He is a cup winner and knows what to expect.

Yep. But if it cost us a 1st to move 1 year of Marleau at 6.25.....

Anyway, Leafs may be able to get one of Detroit’s goalies.

Howard has been worse than Hutch. Bernier maybe, but it would basically have to be for free. He's not very good either.

Crawford is my scrap heap special, yeah. Fire Ceci out of a cannon to equalize the money (also lets us insert Lilly into the lineup), he's a big upgrade on Hutch and has boatloads of cup experience. He's not going to get rattled in a 1st round series against Boston if Freddy shits the bed again.

Ewwww.

Jimmy Howard is worse than Hutchinson at this point, and makes $4M.

Bernier is marginally better than Hutchinson, but is signed for this year & next at $3M.

No thanks.

Nearly half his salary is paid out by this July

Eat 3.5 mil its attractive to teams

Cap hit is cap hit though.

Wont happen but Sakic should be all over a trade chat

You guys seem to all struggle with the fact that he just hasn't been very good over the last 3 years. Sakic has two goalies that have been better this season.

I don’t see why we would move a top 6 winger in Johnson or Kapanen for a backup in Georgiev. From my recollection there haven’t been trades like this.

What if they were to add in Kreider? He expires at the end of the year. There were rumours floating around that the there is a rift between the Rags and Lias Andersson. Could he be a piece we have interest in?

Johnsson and Kappy are signed at reasonable deals for the next few years. Besides returning a middle 1st rounder that you hope at minimum develops into one of them i'm not sure what the Rags can hope to get back in a trade for Kreider. Backup goalies don't hold much value. We paid a 1st(30th)for Andersen who at the time was a way better goalie prospect than Georgiev.

Even then i like Kappy and Johnsson enough to keep them on the team.

Add Kreider?

That becomes the Kreider deal with Georgiev as the throw in.

I had a similar thought, but I still don't love the idea.

Kreider's deal is up at the end of this season and we wouldn't be re-signing him, so he'd be a pure rental. And I'm not really enthusiastic about giving up a young, quality, cost-controlled piece like Kapanen, Johnsson or Kerfoot for a fairly unproven backup goalie and a rental forward.
