The Leafs' goaltending situation / Leafs pursuing Georgiev

I would tend to think Georgiev might be the real deal, not just based on his generally great performances against us, but also here and there catching highlights of his games. That said, I really wouldn't want to gamble Kapanen or Johnsson on that. It's too high a price to part with a top 6 forward for a goalie who will be a backup for at least the next 1.5 seasons and then who knows. I would definitely put together a collection of Bracco and some of the other guys, including Timashov, who I think frankly is a fucking great bottom six player and would only be giving up in the spirit of you have to give to get.

And yeah, the Rangers scout who finding these guys is like their Bergmann except for Russian goalies. That annoys me, plus the fact that they kept mentioning last night that Rittich or however you spell his name was an undrafted UFA signing too. Like, fuck, why are we stuck with shit like Sparks and Kaskisuo and Woll when other teams are finding these guys. Our goalie scouting has been absolutely putrid for years and years, with only Freddy turning out to be a good one.

As for him, I still think he's a good one. It feels like this board is so quick to absolve and defend our dmen every year, and equally swift in condemning our poor goalie. Just about every other goalie is on/hot and off/cold by the season, not by a month or two like Freddy. Dubnyk was a killer just five minutes ago and is now roadkill. There's so many examples. I think Freddy has been really good, and I trust him as much as anyone to take us on a long playoff run.

Just give up a pick for DeSmith. Why would we trade Kappy for a backup?

I was in favour of picking up DeSmith at the beginning of the year, but I think I’m over that now.

Dude’s put up a .904 SV% in 24 AHL games this year, and he’s signed for two more years at a number that can’t be fully buried in the AHL. Hard pass.

Agree that trading Kappy for a backup would be idiotic, though. I mean, all it cost us for Freddie was a 30th overall pick plus a third rounder.

I'm wondering about this -- anyone familiar with dFSv%?

I don't much like Evolving's work, particularly the WAR and GAR stuff, but this seems relatively straightforward and ranks Geogiev very highly. Much more impressive than his sv%.

Not really sure what to make of EH's dFSv% but they have him ranked 5th behind Bishop, Kuemper, Helleybuyck and Binnington this season (800+ mins). Last season he came in ranked 9th on the same metric.

Rangers are also shit defensively -- league worst in xGA/60.

Could be some solid value in there long-term. Not sure what the going rate is for a solid young goalie.

Yeah I’m not completely sold on EW stuff but logically it makes sense that save percentage vs expected save percentage is more informative of quality than just save percentage. Whether their numbers are as good as what the leafs use is another story.

I just don't really get why they include Fenwick in it. Sv% vs. xSv% should be enough.

The fact that he's playing behind a team with the worst xGA/60 in the league and putting up .913 is fairly impressive.

Do I think Kapanen is an air head? Totally. Do you trade Kapanen. No you don't. Guy is a guy who is a playoff warrior, same for Hyman.

Trade the little guy, Johnnson all day long. For whatever. But you don't trade Kapanen, unless, you literally have to.

Kapanen is Russ Courtnall with a shot. You don't trade that.

Yeah I don’t really understand why shots that are blocked are relevant to goalie performance.

Marchand spoke up.. And I respect him for it.

Forward Brad Marchand said he felt bad for Backes, calling him a great teammate and friend.
"This is the part of the business that really [stinks], when you get into numbers games and you get into situations like this," Marchand said. "You don't ever want to see a guy get treated in this kind of way, especially a guy that's put his time in and earned his stripes, and he's been such a great player in this League for a long time.
"I can't say enough good things about him. He is just such a great person, great friend, and he's going to be missed in this room. We relied on him a lot on and off the ice, and he carried a lot of weight with the guys. We're going to miss him there, no question. But we wish him all the best. He's been an incredible teammate. We love him here."

Hat off to Marchand. He knows.

You don't screw around with a dressing room Jeremy.

The advanced numbers on georgiev on both corsica and evolving are break even at even strength but great on the PK.

but PK is far, far, far more unreliable when it comes to evaluating shot quality.

Everything about this guy screams good backup/decent 1b type. Which apparently is worth more than a 45 point cost controlled young penalty killing winger. Who knew
