The Leafs' goaltending situation / Leafs pursuing Georgiev

Wondering if a trade with Columbus could work. Merzlikins could be a target when korpisalo returns.

Korpisalo & Merzlikins are young, still relatively unproven and they're both cheap. They also don't have anyone in the system at the moment who's really lighting it up behind them. So it seems to make sense to just keep both and roll them out as a tandem.

Another team maybe to keep an eye on is Pittsburgh. Tristan Jarry has essentially stolen Matt Murray's starting job over the past couple of months, and they still have a decent backup in Casey DeSmith signed for the next few years toiling away in the minors.

So, maybe Dubas targets Matt Murray? They do have previous connections---he was Dubas's goalie in Sault Ste Marie, and Dubas also reportedly tried to make him part of the Phil Kessel deal. So maybe he circles back around on him now.

The one extra wild card in all this is the expansion draft, and whether it'll prod some teams with two goalies that need to be protected to get ahead of things and get an asset for one of those goalie now. But that didn't seem to happen much in the lead-up to the Vegas draft.

The fact that Dubas has not traded for a goalie yet indicates one of two things for me.

He believes that Fred is just in a small slump.

Or he does not understand how important goaltending is.

The fact that we have no backup goaltending really, sorta scares me into believing B.

As a fan, I don't wanna believe B. But..............

Dubas has no choice now but to get a goalie.

You could chalk this one up to Hutch coming in cold and getting really unlucky, if he wasn't so consistently awful. Obviously not an NHL goalie right now, and Freddie is unstable. It has to be done.

I know it's been discussed already, but who are the most realistic backup goalie options and what will they cost in terms of assets and cap hit?

I say fuck egos and go get Lehner though we know that this is a long shot

The more realistic options are

Georgiev
Crawford
Campbell
Ullmark (my preferable target)
Korpisalo

Hawks are back in the mix. McDonough aint selling.

Ceci and Bracco for Crawford though, maybe.

Its ridiculous Dubas still hasn't pulled the trigger. The thing about goalies is you really don't have to overpay for someone like Lehner. You just need a solid one that can be good for 30-40 games.

If we don't make the playoffs, its because of only one thing. Well two. Keeping Boobcock for 30 games was insane.

Dubas not getting at least one goalie was insane.

Its still insane.

Very watchable team now outside of the crease. Not so watchable at all, inside of it.

I might go back to not watching again. Same as I do with the Jays. Get relevant and gimme a call.

Miller - 19 gp, 0.87 dsv%, 2.71 GSAA
Crawford - 26 gp, 0.73 dsv%, 5.05 GSAA
Bernier - 29 gp, 0.5 dsv%, 3.19 GSAA
Georgiev - 22 gp, 0.45 dsv%, 2.33 GSAA

All of those guys have performed above expectations this season over platoon sample sizes, and should cost nothing in a trade.

Great numbers the last two years but also tough to ignore his AHL numbers this year

He has been bad

ELC contracts for great young players is so important. I wonder who is going to be the first GM, to trade off some great assets trade deadline time, for picks?

Still probably too advanced a theory for Toronto. Tant pis.

Trading Ceci, Barrie and Muzzin would keep Dubas busy enough to fail his marriage lol. But it should engender a nice crop of picks.

Muzzin will resign here, if we give him 70% of what he wants. He wants to be close to his parents and gramps.

Cause folks, even though we are top three or four in the NHL, we forgot goaltending. So to make up for that, lets stock the fff up.

Our core is waaay young enough.

I think he's getting squeezed.

Other GMs are doubtless seeing the Leafs struggle to make the playoffs and see no reason to lower inflated prices on players.

I'd do the same thing in their spot. It's a ruthless league.

I think Ryan Miller would be the goalie that would cost us the least.

He would be a great backup to Andersoft and would be comfortable with full time #1 duties if freddy goes down.
He could easily feed off the rush of being in this market pushing for a playoff spot and his name on the cup.

If that is the case then stand pat and address the issue in the offseason. Unless Dubas is getting a potential replacement for Freddy then an overpay for what is available is not worth it

Yep, no doubt. And honestly, I’d be fine with Dubas overpaying if it gets us a legit starting goalie that could be an improvement on Freddie.

But fuck paying a king’s ransom for one of the mediocre backups that’s floating around on the market right now. I’d rather roll with Hutch/Kaskisuo, even if it means missing the playoffs.

But what is the squeeze for guys like that? A 3rd round pick?

I highly doubt a team like Detroit or Anaheim is demanding Kappy or something like that. Its a buyers market anyway. There are a handful of guys available and one buyer.

We can look at Babcock who cost this team a fuckton of points. But Dubas and his reluctance to get a playable backup has cost them AT LEAST 4 points, which may not seem like a lot but that could be the difference between playoffs and no playoffs.

I fucking love the nerd. I love 95% of what he does. I think he sucks at negotiating contracts but that's a minor thing. His reluctance to shore up their goaltending has been absolutely crippling. He has had more than enough time to solve this issue and I don't buy that teams are asking for 1st rounders for Ryan Miller or some shit.

Go for Georgiev. Give up a prospect like Bracco and fluff. These guys can’t ask for the moon just because we’re in a spot.

I have to believe if anyone asked for Bracco plus fluff though brother, the deal would be done.

Most Gm's are funny creatures, they hang onto assets like I have held onto my silver collection since I was six.

There really isn't a lot of trading going on, for a 31 team league. Bizarre, but its what it is.

Say what you want about Don Cherry. I will never slag the guy cause he was super complimentary to me, when I met him, and the guy always said, the goalie will make you or break you.

Well, maybe we take advantage of a season getting lost, and load up on young players.

Do you think Matthews, Marner and Nylander will be pissed if we miss the playoffs? Nah, they will find something else to do. I am sure. Tavares gets to spend some quality time with his young tyke.

We will be okay.

Timothy will be ready. To beast hopefully.

Its a win win win. Get Rielly healthy, trade, Ceci, Barrie, Muzzin and Johnsson. Load up like the Avalanche did, when they traded Lindros.

Be happy.

Guys, Kyle, we are NOT going to win the Cup this year. Not with two suspect goalies. Not going to happen. So get bigger, and better.

Muzzin will resign here if we give him 70% of what his agent wants. If its too much, cya. Love him but cya.

I like buying stuff that is too far away for most to see.

The Leafs are in great shape. Thanks to Dubas actually.

He will impress the crap out of me, if he does what I say he should do.

He has no Johnny Bower, and he sure as shit doesn't have Terry Sawchuk.

So....trade and load.

Next year, we could rule the NHL.

Detroit? WTF?

Nothing that Detroit has is an upgrade on what we have, or worth paying anything for. Howard is absolute trash and worse than Hutch. Bernier would be a marginal improvement, probably, but I'd vomit in my mouth if had to watch Jonathan Bernier tend goal for the Leafs again.

Both those guys also make real money.

Miller would be an upgrade and a cheap one. But the question with him is less about acquisition cost, and more about whether he'd be interested in waiving his NTC and moving from southern California to be a stop-gap backup goalie in a Canadian city for a few months.
