The Leafs' goaltending situation / Leafs pursuing Georgiev

Ya Mirtle is pretty reasonable in the article. He actually says he doesn't think the Rangers will get their asking price from anyone (a good, young, NHL forward), and that they'll have to decide whether to take less or carry 3 goalies.

well, they're not going to carry 3 goalies.

There just isn't a huge market for 1B/Backups. Even young, decent ones. Problem with the Rangers position is that:

- Everyone in the league knows that they don't want to carry 3 goalies
- They also know that Henrik isn't going anywhere
- Also know that Shesty is their legit goalie of the future and might be a stud already
- Also know that even if they could move Henrik, they lose Georgiev for nothing in the expansion draft
- Also know that they'll have to protect Georgiev in the expansion draft or risk losing him....unless they view him as their starter, which he's really kind of not good enough to be and might not even project out to be.

Rags are in no hurry to sort this out (deadline is still a ways off) so there's no harm in asking for the moon. But they shouldn't get even close to the return they want. His value proposition is basically that he's 23.

Another reason for Dubas to pursue Lehner ... play them off one another to get the deal done sooner than later.

What are the chances that Georgiev gets scooped up in expansion? I feel like there are better goalies out there that will be exposed.

He'd still be my #1 choice, seeing as he'd be a legit possibility to supplant Freddie as our #1 right now.

I'd be surprised if Chicago made him available, though. I don't think they're looking to rebuild, so they need a #1 goalie going forward, and that guy isn't Corey Crawford anymore. So who better than Lehner?

The only wild card would be if Lehner wants to play for a contender/playoff team, and isn't willing to re-sign with Chicago because he doesn't believe the Hawks are that team going forward.

Lehner is on record saying he’ll take no discounts so I don’t think it matters to him if it’s a contender or not. It’ll end up being who gives him the best contract.

NYR isn't really in a position of strength on this.

Even without the looming expansion draft or the fact that they're currently forced to carry three goalies, the market for unproven young backups is never particularly strong. Pittsburgh spent the entire summer trying to get a second round pick for either Jarry or DeSmith, and got no bites.

there’s a theory out there that Price would be left unprotected (if he agrees to waive) to go to Seattle.

For Seattle it’s the big name goalie on an expansion team ala M.A. Fleury that they can market around.

For Price it’s being back near home, he played for Tri Cities and his wife is from Seattle.

Sure it’s all speculation but if it somehow comes to fruition? They’re taking Price over Georgiev, even with that contract.

Dream on.

Seattle isn't taking Price off your hands.

We shall see.

The salient point is Seattle will not likely take Georgiev, there will be better options. Some you don’t even see coming until it happens. It’s hard choosing who to protect.

Wonder if the Leafs could trade for Georgiev and flip him to Chicago for Lehner. Chicago gets a young goalie and the Leafs get a goalie that can help now and may be their starter next year.

You're still peddling this crap eh?

Seattle won't need anyone to market around. Vegas had sold out their seasons tickets long before they traded for MAF.

Winning is the best marketing aid in professional sports, nobody in Seattle could pick Carey Price out of a police lineup.

and if given the chance to picking one of Price or Georgiev today, nevermind in a couple years at the draft, but today...why would you ever pick Price?

let's brainstorm other goalie possibilities.

anyone?

Various 1B/Backup options

Crawford with retained salary
Raantta with some sort of retention/salary going back after Kuemper gets back from injury
DeSmith
Cam Talbot if Calgary falls out of the playoff race before the deadline
Aaron Dell
Anders Nilsson

Because contrary to your keen opinion, he’s still good. I’m even willing to bet he’d excel on a team that can score.

Even if he doesn’t get moved he’ll have his good years. The Habs problem is that Primeau looks legit and will likely be ready in 2 years. What do you do with Price when he is?

we can move this part of the discussion to the standings thread. I don’t want to derail the back up goalie discussion. I was just pointing out there will be scenarios not contemplated and I doubt Seattle takes Georgiev.

There isn't much out there. The bad teams generally have bad goaltending or bloated contracts or someone too young to move like Gibson. So it's either go after Lehner or Georgiev or a cheap veteran like Ryan Miller and hope he can provide more then Hutch.

Knowing Dubas he’s probably also looking in Europe. And KHL guys available?

.909 is what it is. 2 of the last 3 years he's been bad. He's 32 with an albatross of a contract.

What do you do with him? You suck it up and pay him, because no one else wants that contract.

31 is moveable at a 7.5 mil cap hit
