The Mitchell Marner Contract Watch Thread

its all about building trust and establishing yoirself as a fair and consistent dealer - right now Ferris might not actually believe dubas actually believes the numbers he's showing him that say marner is just not on matthews' level, but as long as dubas stays consistent in his evaluations with all his players and their agents, the less of this bargaining gamesmanship garbage we'll see.

Maybe I'm old school but you also need to establish that you shouldn't be fucked with over nonsense.

From everything reported, I don't think they've spent much time thinking about Dubas' evaluations. If that were the case, we wouldn't be listening to the continued stupid demands. They haven't budged an iota.

It’s hard to know exactly what is going on behind the scenes but from the very beginning this has never seemed like the Marner camp was negotiating in good faith.

If true Im on board. Sorry kid you are good but your ego doesn't trump whats good for the team

Im out!

TOR has made seven and eight year offers in the $11M AAV universe but because it’s a lower AAV and longer term than Auston Matthews, it hasn’t been palatable to Marner.

By all reports, logic, evidence and comparables don't enter into the equation at all.

The hard stance of the Marner camp is "pay him the equivalent of what Matthews got".

If that doesn't change, then I fully support letting him sit out as long as necessary until either he agrees to a sane deal with the Leafs, or some team that's willing to pay him offers an appropriate return in a trade for him.

If it takes him not playing NHL games for an entire year or two, that's fine. But don't under any circumstance cave. And if some team ever offer-sheets him for Matthews money (which I don't think will ever happen), take the four first round picks and move on.

Great article on what Mitch is and how this is likely to all play out for him next season

https://theleafsnation.com/2019/09/11/mitch-marners-primary-assist-magic/

In the list of players above, all 25 of them saw some regression from one season to the next. But how much? On average they saw a drop of 0.44 A1/60 the next season, with a nearly identical median of 0.45. If we adjust Marner’s results last year down by 0.44 A1/60, he falls from 36 to 27. It should be noted that 27 primary assists at 5v5 is still really good – it would have ranked 4th best in the NHL last season behind Sidney Crosby, Artemi Panarin, and Connor McDavid, slightly ahead of Nikita Kucherov. But it would drop Marner to 85 total points, a bit behind other top restricted free agents like Mikko Rantanen and Brayden Point.
If Marner’s true talent is closer to 80 points than 100, I think that changes the negotiation.

Just based on that quote - adjusting his 5v5 down for sh% makes sense but then not adjusting for PP time when saying "80pt or 100pt player" doesn't make sense.

Mitch is really damn good - clearcut better than a guy like Rantanen for example, and close with Point. He's just not at Matthews' level - but nobody other than McDavid and Crosby is at that level, either.

if this is true, then yeah, ship his ass out of here. not the ideal outcome, but if he wants to go down this road, he should be prepared to accept the consequences.

an AAV of close to $11 m on a 7 or 8 year deal is already an overpay, by any objective measure. it kinda sounds like Paul wants Mitch to get all of the spotlight somewhere else, rather than share it with Matty.

That's a Bobo quote.

Then, yeah, fuck him. That's just greedy as all hell.

Makes me wonder is Dubas and Shanny are leaking this. I support that, as it shows just how generous they've been and unreasonable Marner has been.

Yea I am souring greatly on Marner here. Would not mind shipping him out at this point. He is not on Matthews level or Tavares for that matter

we can talk all day about Paul being a lunatic, but ultimately this rests on Mitchie's shoulders. he's not a kid anymore, he's an adult, and its time he takes some ownership over the situation.

of course, alternately, he is the one who is adamant he deserves Matty money, and he is driving the bus on this. neither scenario looks good.

I still say this is just ferris doing his "push it to the limit" thing. In his mind there's no reason to agree to anything yet. Keep pushing for as much as possible.

I just think dubas is a different negotiator than he's used to - a guy who will willingly pony up right from the start and then not budge.

yeah, I think I'm inclined to agree with you re: Dubas.

not so sure re: Ferris.

@IanGraph

Carolina refused to pay Sebastian Aho what he was worth, so he had to leverage an offer sheet to get a contract where he was *still* underpaid. Toronto keeps offering Marner way more than he’s worth, so he keeps asking for more knowing he can probably get it. This is a problem.

I think this is all bs. makes me wonder if they're waiting for the 1st day of the NHL season to come to an agreement. Something about LTIR contracts, rookie bonuses for (Sandin, Liljegren?) that makes it a better time to sign Mitch.

or he's a truly greedy little shit and should be moved. I hope its the top option.
