The Mitchell Marner Contract Watch Thread

I want to see Mitch stay home for a year and JT create the offense on your team . You will miss that no shave greedy bitch more than you think
We know that he would be missed. He's one of the best wingers in the NHL.

That doesn't mean his market value is even close to Auston's though.

Marner was 13th in P/60 last year at 3.47

Slightly behind Matthews who was 3.471

Kucherov lead the league with 4.671

You know, it's tough to hear young players being called greedy.

I realize that fan's would rather have players that bow to the GM and coach, never rock the boat, and most importantly sign team-friendly deals when their negotiating power is the lowest - BUT COME ON!

If this was your future, you don't think you'd look at the situation and see how you could play it out in your favour?

You mean like he did all those years on Long Island? This topic has been beaten to death yet people still try and argue it

Of course we would miss him, I hate when people play word games in this discussion. Saying that Mitch Marner isn't as impactful as Matthews and JT isn't a slight in the least. Matthews and JT are two of the most impactful centres in the league.

Would we miss him as much as we would miss a top 5 centre though? No, no we wouldn't. He shouldn't be paid like a top 5 centre either.

It's a weird argument based on some weird wording. Marner is the offense "creator". Who will create the offense and be the offense "creator" if he sits? Tavares is not a creator of offense, he merely experiences offense after it has been created.

Yeah Matthews is unquestionably better. The problem for the Leafs is Marner led the team in scoring two years in a row, and led the league in p/60 last year. So they have a good "traditional argument".

If Matthews was healthy it would have been a tougher sell.

At some point Marner's camp will fold though, just like Nylander did. These contracts get done 100% of the time.

Nylander didn't fold .....Dubas caved like a cheap suitcase and gave him his money

Nylander was prepared to stay home for the year til Dubas hands him an 18 mil gift for 10 months

Eh? If this was my future, I don't think I'd be overly concerned with the difference between 9 and 10 million, no. Don't get me wrong, I'd try to negotiate for a fair assessment of my worth, but as has been established by now, the number Mitchy is asking for is well in excess of a fair assessment of his worth.

I think mitch might be scared by what bracco might look like with JT and Hyman.

And I'm not even a huge bracco fan

Not according to willy.

I haven't really seen anybody around here with the expectation that Marner sign a "team-friendly deal".

I'm all for the guy getting paid his fair market value. But his fair market is most definitely NOT the same deal that Matthews got.

I never blame a man for wanting to make as much as he can. But keep it reasonable please.

it's an ego/pride thing. He wants as much as Auston and probably won't accept less.

Or rather, his dad wants as much as Auston.

Hilarious. They caved because they gave him a pile of money up front?

The Leafs give pretty much all of their major signings most of their money up front. Even Johnsson, Kapanen & Kerfoot, all signed this summer, are getting most of their money in signing bonuses. It's the Leafs' way of levelling the playing field with the teams in no/low-tax states.

All that matters to the organization is the AAV, which for Nylander is a very reasonable $6.9M (a fair ways away from the $8.5M Willy was reportedly seeking). Let's also remember that Willy was the one who called Dubas 20 minutes to the deadline and said "let's make a deal", not Dubas.

Marner not only would lose a year of his prime and ~$10m by sitting out, but would also add another year longer before he hits UFA.

What would a realistic Marner trade look like? These contract rumors are beyond atrocious, and I am a HUGE Mitch fan. Just had enough of this crap

He's had his agent screaming that he shouldn't be second fiddle to Auston Matthews or anyone else. Whinging on about being disrepected while raking in millions and being showered with a massive amount of adulation. JT's UFA contract is not good enough. He could be called a lot worse than greedy.

I'm pretty sure it gets done, just concerned its going to December 1. Nylander sitting was a circus, and took a lot of enjoyment out of the season. If this drags into the season it will be worse.
