The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

For me, if I’m Dubas, I’d want to pitch my bigger ideas to the board directly. Even if they rejected it, at least I’d know they heard my best pitch instead of whatever Shanny said.

But it wouldn’t be a deal breaker until I won something of note in my dream job
That second part is key.

Of course he wants to. But typically GMs with 5 years under their belt and no playoff success don't get handed Prez roles. He might and it'll be mostly be because of the Toronto spotlight IMO.

just to be clear, I wouldn’t necessarily want the prez role, just the opportunity to pitch the rare big idea I felt strongly about

Sure, but I don't think the board gives as much of a fuck about anything but big big money ideas. Sure, I'd want to be the one pitching them "so i know Karlsson has 11.5 left per year forever on his deal and is missing an achilles tendon and all....buttttt....." but that's something you earn by like, building a team that makes a few semi finals, or heaven forbid actually wins something.

Basically, I think the whole bit about access to the board is overblown. Nobody mentioned shit about the board for yeeears until this happened last week:

^ @LeafGm

I want to dunk on the Leafs media as much as anyone and they totally deserve it based on their antics lately... But they've clearly interviewed Treliving in person. The interest there is obvious IMO and something I totally would have assumed anyway. Experienced GM, led a team with strong nerdies for a good amount of time. But yeah, overall underwhelming.

We shall see.

Fair enough. The next position I’ll turn to in order to remain in denial is “I think Friedman is flat-out lying”.

ME’s “He got a pity/courtesy interview for being the failson trust fund baby of one of T-Bomb’s golfing buddies, but isn’t actually being considered” works too I guess.

I cant help but think that in the end any GM will find that the mlse board gives them more leeway and rubber stamps than any other owner does.

Like i get it that the board might and has been involved in the GM and Prez hiring/salary stuff but no matter which way i approach it i just can't figure how the mlse board would give a flying fuck about analyzing individual hockey transactions under a hard cap. Just doesnt make sense to me.

I was under the impression that the board only needs to be involved when it's a major financial decision outside of a previously discussed framework.

Well now you're just being anti-semitic

Yeah… who the fuck knows what happened or not…. But not having an occasional guest seat at the big table to pitch some outside the box idea is a common complaint I‘ve noticed in different corporate structures I’ve worked at

I'd imagine a guy like Don Waddell, president, just gets a flat no to a ton of shit. Like not having the PR guy do analytics on the side.

Was Hitler actually wrong though?

"and that children, is how how Mindzeye finally got his ass banned"

And I'm sorry, if your contention is that the board blocked you from doing x deal for a really pricey defenseman...

don't you still have a responsibility to make sure the trade you actually do make is a good one? And when you look at that long, long list of draft picks traded the other day, don't you think he had plenty of opportunity to make moves to win still?

Just seems like excuse making to me.

Yeah like, for example, I’d be surprised if the board wasn’t involved in the Clarkson for Horton swap.

Since that was the front office essentially committing to spending $25M or so outside of the confines of the salary cap in order to erase a mistake made by the GM.

But even something as major as the Kadri trade, I’d bet the first they heard anything about it was in news reports after the deal happened.

I also have no idea what the big idea would be in a salary cap world — maybe some Robidas Island chicanery. The NHL is not the NBA where you can ask permission to blow up the budget and pay a luxury tax

but even then - really?

the board has approved all sorts of LTIR transactions that took the team way over the cap in real money. why would they give a fuck about money?

If they're keeping everything almost completely locked down, and any Treliving stuff is apparently still getting out, that'd be a strike against Treliving for me I think.

I doubt anything further has trickled out about Treliving other than the very initial stuff, which is the only stuff they have to go on....and I'm pretty sure they're all just bouncing this one piece of info around and that's making them believe it's a stronger piece of info than it actually it.

that doesn't mean that Trelving won't be the next gm of course.

Well, just involved to the point you need to run it by them.

I agree - there is only a crapload of evidence that they say yes to pretty much everything.

That I'd believe.
