The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

These guys are really trying hard to get Willy like 12 million. What they don't mention is he's 100% traded soon if he asks too much.

It’ll be disappointing if Matthews signs for only 3 years. That takes him to 28/29 and that’s when he goes for the 8 year deal to maximize his earning potential under a much higher salary cap figure.

That wouod be quite risky to do that

Only Leafs signed RFA deals as if they were UFA, got maximum no-trade protection, and term to take them up to prime earning years. McDavid could have insisted on 5 years too, and he would have been UFA right now.

Either our guys are extra greedy, or Dubas was extra inept.

Is all of this really true though?

- Eichel signed 8/10 as a RFA coming off of a 64 point season. This deal more than any other set the market for Matthews and subsequently Marner imo.
- Werenski bridged and then face raped Columbus for 9.5x8 despite being a #2 defenceman
- lol Seth Jones
- Kaprizov insisted on 5 years in Minnesota after his ELC finished
- Cale Makar did 6 years instead of 8 on his RFA extension
- Laine 2 yr RFA bridged his way into a 4x8.7 deal
- Aho signed a 5 yr offer sheet with Montreal for his first RFA deal
- Quinn Hughes went 6 yrs on his RFA extension
- Jason Robertson went 4 yrs on his with Dallas, despite Dallas signing everyone and their mother to 8 yr deals around him

There really seems to be a 50/50 split in the market where some guys want 8 years and some guys want 4-6 years on their first RFA deals (or wanted 8 at inflated money and settled for 4-6)

I doubt Matthews does something unprecedented in league history tbh.

Like be a North American kid, take a pass on both the CHL & NCAA and go play his draft season for a big paycheque in a top professional league in Europe?

And while this doesn’t fall under “unprecedented in league history”, he did take his own path again by commanding the absolute maximum AAV he could reasonably ask for on a max-term extension, but then only commit for five years unlike his contemporaries.

So yeah, kind of a silly take. The only conventional contract he’s ever signed as a hockey player was his ELC—which is the one time he had no leeway due to the CBA.
