Didn’t know that. I guess it’s possible that he was bad, but Burke was so much worse that Lou still seemed like a leap in the right direction.

Anyway, as for what Dubas did to get out from Lou’s mistakes, it’s possible that another GM would have found a different way to deal with that. Luckily, whoever comes in next isn’t going to be saddled with the same problems.

Jury’s out on both Dubas and Shanny. Lots of good, but also lots of not enough.

Bur Tampa won after Yzerman. Caps won after McPhee. Hawks won after Tallon. Pens won after Shero.

the Leafs aren’t the first contender to fire a GM that couldn’t get the team over the hump.

and let’s be honest anyway. The Leafs are good because of Matthews, Marner and Willy who were here before Dubas.

I like Dubas, but come on. He didn’t even build this team. Just shuffled the depth.

Deserves credit for bringing in multiple good defenders though. Spent to do it, but prioritized that shit and did it.

He created and maintained a clean balance sheet and was able to keep the band together. But he never elevated the roster nearly enough. Maybe the next guy will have more of a killer instinct.

I think he did a good job rebuilding the D from what it was when he took over while still keeping the core together, when the hockey world said that wasn't possible.

I think his drafting was above average. I think had a lot of "hits" in value signings.

But goaltending was a big issue here and his coaching pick ended up being a pretty big bust, That Kadri trade was pretty awful too. And at the end of the day, when the team isn't successful in the playoffs this many times, the GM doesn't tend to get... the biggest contract in the league, as rumoured.

All I've learned from this experience is no matter how much I like the next guy, I will be somewhere between pretty content to thrilled when he gets fired.

Fact is, if the next guy comes and wins a cup within the next few years, Kyle deserves credit too. I shit on him a lot but he put the next gm in an awesome spot with that sexy cap management.
