The Motherfucking 2021 Season Thread

It's amazing that someone like Crouse can be a high draft pick for reasons that are pretty dubious in retrospect (didn't score much in the OHL in his draft year, but went high because he was big, truculent and "NHL ready"), and then go on to have several mediocre NHL seasons and show zero signs of progress or potential, but all of that has zero impact on his perceived value to a guy like Button.

Six years removed from him being an 11th overall pick, and to Button he's still a blue chip prospect worth a blue chip return. It's just like all the Sam Bennett horseshit from earlier in the season.

lol why do people coddle this guy so much.

The list of excuses some people throw out for this guy is pretty incredible.

If he’s not 100% healthy (how many players are in the middle of an NHL season), if he doesn’t have a fat long-term contract extension, if he’s not the unquestioned starter, if fans and media aren’t mean to him, if he gets enough rest, if he isn’t so rested that he gets rusty, etc, etc.

At what point do these fucking dummies pull out Occam’s Razor and just come to the conclusion that he’s just not a good goalie at this stage of his career?

Boudreau was his coach though, not Toronto media. The fact that his coach thinks Freddy can't play when he isn't 100% healthy is more damning than an excuse IMO. No athlete is ever 100% healthy all the time.

Nevermind a goalie that has to get up/down a million times in an hour to stop hard objects shot at them at 100 mph. How often do goalies have no pain?

Thats probably why he's only ever been really good for a few weeks a season.

Perhaps he meant it as more of a criticism but it's getting a bit hard to separate out all the terrible takes from each other. Seems to be a huge amount of analysts that think he's going to heal and be our guaranteed playoff starter and I don't understand it at all.

Hey Folks,
Just saw this rumour out of The Star: https://www.thestar.com/sports/leaf...l-granlund-on-their-trade-deadline-radar.html

One name that hasn’t been mentioned is Kings right winger Adrian Kempe. According to an industry source who requested anonymity, the 24-year-old Kempe has been heavily scouted by the Leafs. At six-foot-two and 200 pounds, he would come with a $2-million (U.S.) salary-cap hit this year and next before restricted free agency.

I had him on my Hockey Fantasy team this early this year, in fantasy, they had him playing ALL the forward positions. Young, RFA and cheap. Is he any good? Seems to be an averagey player with some upside?

I don't know how he meant it, but thats a fatal flaw in a starting goalie if you ask me. It explains a lot about how Freddy can be the best goalie in the league in November every year and then stink the rest of the season.

he's pretty good and young.

big, good skater, gritty and good defensively. only a 20gl/40pt type guy at this point but he's only 24 and on a better offensive team than LA could get up into the 25/50 range pretty easily i'd think. maybe higher.

I don't really understand why LA would trade him at this point.

honestly now it is just comical to me.

the cognitive dissonance required to ignore the fact that Jack is also battling injury, yet undefeated...

Or even that Michael Hutchinson, with a not-insignificant sample of eight games now, is leaps and fucking bounds ahead of Fred’s performance this year.

I mean, Hutch isn’t injured as far as I know, but even just being Michael Hutchinson is a pretty big handicap for someone trying to provide average or better NHL goaltending. But even he’s managing to do it where Fred failed.

anything to avoid complimenting the Leafs D

it was pretty funny on saturday night (i think) when the panel so quickly and easily and unanimously said Montreal's defense was better, even though they also say montreal's goaltending is better, all while the leafs let in fewer goals.
