According to their assistant coach, yes. They're instructed to hold the puck instead of shooting if they're outside of a goal scoring area (between the dots, up to the high slot).

I've posted the interview before.
 
Zbad got beat out because of the extreme quality of the competition he was facing.

It's not like he lost out to Tim F-ing Brent.

To a statistically relevant degree? I don't believe so no. For obvious reasons, they're not really in control of where those shots are taken from. Good defences tend to limit total shots, and limit PP attempts against.

I disagree with that approach, but to each their own. IMO a good defensive team is aggressive on the opposing player giving them little to no time to set up for a shot, and they keep the shots to the outside, so to answer the question a good defensive team can and should keep the opposing shots down to about 25-27 a game on average. The Leafs did a much better job at positioning last year and keeping teams to the outside but they still could not make the simple pass out and were pinned for too long in their own end for large chunks of last year, the dead giveaway is them giving up the 4th most shots against in the league coupled with them having the 3rd fewest shots for.

not really. the Leafs don't get better quality shots off than other teams, they just take fewer low quality shots.

it was weird - I saw one of the kids take an easy unscreened slapper on net from the top of the circle after skating down the wing this preseason and thought right away that we rarely see that from this team.

nope. facing 29 different groups of forwards, with 29 different systems, its very hard to limit quality shots without a corresponding downtick in total shots.
