The New Division

Reading this thread you'd think there are two teams in the new division. Maybe they should make a third one... N.E. or Northern Egotists.

Revisionist history. Those were tight series. You have a future hall of fame goaltender and we had a guy letter in loopers from the half boards.

It was 90% lalime.

Just like Wings fans, always blame the goalie. After you couldn't solve Cujo, and he bolted down the freeway to Detroit for more money, they blamed him too. How is it that your fantastic team couldn't beat Cujo, but suddenly in Detroit, Cujo was their Lalime?
Because it wasn't your goaltending.
Your
team
had
no
heart.
Someone please rename this thread the "Senators" please and pin it to the top. They won't talk about their team on their own board, so you might as well put their thread here.

Martin havlat played on our third line behind Alfie and hoss. Vastly more talented.

Name 4 wingers on any of those Sens teams that were better than Havlat. If Havlat was a "3rd liner" for the Sens because both Alfie & Hossa played the same side as Havlat, that speaks to how imbalanced your team was, not how deep it's talent was.

He played LW on the PP.

But yeah our 3 best players were natural RW'ers. What are you going to do?

The Schaefer-Fisher-Havlat line was my favourite. They absolutely killed it one year.

What are ya gonna do? Play one of them on the other side. Hossa has played plenty of left wing in his career, and lots of guys with dangles on big wrist shots like Havlat have made the transition to their off wings just fine. It's not like you're trying to put him on the blueline or in net ffs, it's just the other side of the ice.

And again, our "fairies" beat up on Philly and NJ when your fairies always bitched out to them.

Who can explain it.

It's a really small sample size though, so I'm not sure how much can be derived from it in the end.

Ottawa beat New Jersey in 1997-98 (Conference Quarter-Finals), lost to them in 2002-03 (Conference Finals), and beat them in 2006-07 (Conference Semi-Finals).

Ottawa beat Philadelphia in 2001-02 (Conference Quarter-Finals) and 2002-03 (Conference-Semi Finals).

That's a 2-1 series record against New Jersey and a 2-0 series record against Philadelphia.

Toronto beat Philadelphia in 1998-99 (Conference Quarter-Finals) and lost to them in 2002-03 (Conference Quarter-Finals) in seven games, and in 2003-04 (Conference Semi-Finals) in six games (OT in the final game).

Toronto lost to New Jersey in 1999-00 (Conference Semi-Finals) in six games, and in 2000-01 (Conference Semi-Finals) in seven games.

That's a 1-2 record against Philadelphia and an 0-2 series record against New Jersey. But they could have easily won any of the four series they ended up losing in that time frame.

A few bounces either way and things look different.

It was 90% lalime.

Belfour only played against Ottawa in 2003-04. What was your excuse in the other three match-ups?

A real problem for Ottawa was Muckler had no balls @ the trade deadlines. Dude did nothing because he was afraid to give up any futures.

The Leafs' starters were better than the Sens' starters, but it's amazing how many points the Leafs threw away with insanely bad backup goalies.

the sens had a few problems.

i don't know why everybody focuses on lalime's game 7 in 04, though.

ya, he gave up two shit goals to nieuwendyk, but last i saw, the leafs scored 4 goals and ottawa scored 1. the leafs win that game even without the two shit goals. why? because the sens folded.

a big problem was they had too many powder puffs. guys who pussed out and let themselves get pushed around. dackell, prospal (though he finally learned how to play, albeit a few years too late for ottawa), havlat, salo, yashin, bonk, rachunek, pothier, etc.

the leafs played tough and those guys folded. they let toronto do whatever they wanted.

and, yeha, muckler screwed them by picking heatley/redden (two powderpuffs) over havlat/chara (elite winners).

It's all on Muckler.

We needed additional grit and leadership...but he never went for it.

Guys like Roberts and Nieuwendyk were especially important back then. Leafs had them, and the Sens didn't.

Not even getting into the issue with Lalime consistently letting in bad, soft goals.

Yeah as already mentioned, as atrocious and deflating as those goals by Nieuwendyk were, they are hardly the only bad goals Lalime let in that cost us games. MaCauley, Sundin, Roberts...all game winners, all stunk of the worst ass.

As for Havlat on the wing...yeah I'd have put him or Hossa at LW. Unfortunately it wasn't my decision to make. Jacques was painfully stubborn, he never made adjustments, which cost us as well. Quinn would adapt to what was happening on the ice, Martin refused. I am sure that we were up 3-2 against the Leafs twice in series' and couldn't put them away.

Quinn also played the refs, league and the media like a piano. The guy was a true artiste in that regard. He simply outcoached Martin badly in every aspect of the game.

I still can't believe that you guys won't admit that you had the overwhelming advantage in nets. Whether Cujo or Eddie sucked in the next round, or with their next team's or not, they were absolutely lights out against Ottawa. I am sure if you check Cujo's numbers in Detroit, you'll find that they weren't so bad after all.

I remember one game I was at where Hossa had 2 breakaways on the same shift in OT, and Cujo stoned him both times, one save was with the shaft of his stick. It was simply unbelievable. Pretty sure that was the game that Roberts ended, but can't recall. Might have been the Sundin OT goal game.

I know you like to say you were too tough for Ottawa, but then explain how you could never beat Philly or NJ, and we could. Maybe the first time we faced off, the Sens were pushed around but you can't seriously say that they were physically intimidated by the Leafs in all 4 series.

Well you can say it, but it would be BS.

I never said Mogilny wasn't good for you, but to say he was a third liner for you is disingenuous. It wasn't 76 goal Mogilny you had lacing them up for you, but he was still pretty good at that point in his career.

The Leafs beat Philly in 1998-99 with largely the same core that beat Ottawa in their first three series. You're inferring far too much from a limited sample size.

And we would have defeated Jersey in 2001 sans the Domi elbow incident. That woke up Stevens, who had one of the best seasons of his career that year, and the Devils were unbelievable the next two games.

We can play the woulda coulda shoulda game too.

Like what if Lalime didn't allow two beach balls in from the boards?
