The New Division

And again, we return to the fact that Kadri, Franson, and not to mention Kessel, are all in a dangerous zone with their contract situations.

I just don't get it when it comes to Kessel. He can't say no to a good deal now that Bozak is here for 5 years, and there's no way the Leafs are being cheap. So what's the hold up on a $7M x 5 to 7 year deal?

A lot of deals are being signed right now that are going to be bargains very soon. They're going to be great deals when the cap is 70+.

Lock up your good, young players for as long as you can while working with a 64M cap. Doing a bridge deal is idiotic, unless you have no faith in the player you're signing. You're only going to pay more when the cap is substancially higher in the near future.

I don't disagree although neither you nor I know what Subban would have accepted last year on a long term deal. I have heard up to 6 million a season, others as low as 4.5 so who knows.

The one thing with PK's deal is a 5x5 deal last year would have only bought out maybe 1 or 2 years of free agency. If he signs that 5x5, then goes on to sign a 10-12x5 deal after, that might end up being more money than a 2.5x2 + 7x8 deal if you count total money. All depends on where you think he'll develop + cap inflation to see if it's a good deal in retrospect.

As for Kessel, no way in hell he comes close to 7M a year. He should come in at around the 8.5M mark. The only problem will be if the Leafs don't think he's worth that much.

Giroux just signed longterm for $8.2.

Kessel's not going to get that, let alone beat that.

Kessel will get something like 7.5 x 7/8 yrs. Phaneuf will be around 7. Maybe just a slight raise on his 6.5.

In the end, it's not a dramatic rise in player costs for the Leafs. An increase of about 2-2.5M for both.

Debatable. I would personally rather pay a second-line power forward 5+ than a bottom-pairing defender close to 4. Of course, Cowen isn't a UFA either...

The guy has literally done nothing in the NHL. Why the hell would they give him a long term deal and $3 mill.

He should make $1-$2 for 2 years.

In his career, Cowen has played at a 16 point pace while playing bottom pair minutes. That's worth 3M?

Sens fans are generous.

Gunnarsson's been in the league 4 years, he's played at a 25 point pace, and he's established himself as a solid middle pair guy. And he just got to 3M this year.
