5. Toronto Maple Leafs
This might be the most fascinating goalie competition in the league this preseason. James Reimer is a bit like Crawford in that he continues to have people who question his ability despite constant production whenever he is healthy. There aren't many other teams who would go out and trade for another starting-caliber goalie (Jonathan Bernier) after its incumbent had posted a .924 save percentage and led the team to the postseason. Clearly, there is question inside the Toronto organization as to whether Reimer is a legitimate No. 1 goalie on a playoff team.
The Kings organization loved Bernier, from his makeup to his skill set. Like Schneider, Bernier quietly handled a tough situation with class and will get every opportunity to earn regular playing time.
Opposing goalie's breakdown: "Reimer is the first goalie in 10 years to take that team to the playoffs. He showed when he's healthy he's capable of being a No. 1 goaltender. The new goaltending coach [Rick St. Croix] has allowed him to be more athletic and lighten up his style a little bit, where he has more freedom while still playing the way he learned from Francois Allaire. Bernier has some great fundamentals and a great read of the game and is coming from a team that has put up great results."
