The New Division

I know we talked a lot about the merits of giving Naz a longer deal or a bridge contract and I wanted to see them do a longer deal to save some money down the road. But having Naz at only 2.9 for the next two years is gonna be a complete steal.
 
Cowen's deal ladders him up, so the starting point of his next contract will be $4.5mil.
 
Gunnarsson's been in the league 4 years, he's proven himself to be a 20-30 point, 20+ minute middle pair dman who has spent time on the top pair. And he just got to 3M.

Cowen is an unproven bottom pair dman with very little NHL history. He's worth 1.5-2M max.
 
cowen has played the role of a top-4 critical shutdown/physical defenceman in the playoffs. then he got hurt. he's being paid based on that projection and his upside because he might even get BETTER if he stays healthy.

top pair, massive shutdown physical defencemen who can also skate are extremely valuable. more valuable than a 2nd line winger with spotty conditioning and attitude issues.

At no point has Cowen ever played top 4 minutes, regular season or playoffs.

Who the the 2nd line winger? Or are you talking about Kadri...the 12th highest scoring centre in the league last year?

If he was worth $1.5-$2m then thats what he would have gotten. Clearly the team feels he has proven himself more than a random Leaf poster on forum ice.

First rounders, especially early ones, often get a decent payday. Cowen was good two years ago for the Sens - very good. $3m for a guy that will likely be a goto on the defensive end and has untapped offensive ability is reasonable.

The Sens made the same mistake the Leafs made with Schenn. Overpaying for potential that just isn't there. Sens paid 3M for a bottom pair dman.

Glad we're not stuck with that problem anymore.

Hate when people make shit arguments like this. So people on ForumIce are never allowed to suggest a player is overpaid - if an NHL team is giving him the money that's the money he must be worth? Come on. You can do better than that.
 
Yeah its a stupid deal for a guy like Cowen who hasn't proven anything. At least Schenn was a proven top 4 NHL dman when he signed. And even that contract was excessive.

Signing a guy based on where he was drafted is pretty dumb.
 
I actually think the deal is fine. It's not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. Cap's gonna skyrocket.

The whole "NHL team must be right because NHL team" argument is hilarious though.
 
The Sens are going to be investings lots of $$$ into defensive specialists with limited offensive skills -- Phillips, Cowen, Methot. None of these guys are locks to get to 20 points.

It's a very one dimensional blueline aside from Karlsson.
 
You're both right, his deal pays him $1.5 this season.

It ladders him up to $2.7, $3.7 and $4.5mil.

Better hope his play improves with his salary.

How can you say it isn't there? He hasn't even had the ability over the past 12 months to prove himself.

His play two seasons ago was excellent for us as 21 year old defenseman.

Year 1 - overpaid
Year 2 - reasonable
Year 3 - reasonable
Year 4 - underpaid.

He has untapped potential. Unless we're in the business of writing off 22 year olds that lost a season to injury.
