Maybe “look” is the problem. I’m sure Chase Reid “looked” great.

McKenna was one of 8 players <19 to score 2.00 ppg since 1993. He “looked” great and was objectively elite.

The restrictions on management seem to be less strict than the ones on coaches.

I remember when we were in the reverse situation ten years ago or so, where Rick Dudley was able to quit a senior role in our front office a month before the draft, become an assistant GM for the Habs and take full part in their draft with no issues.
 
So the Leafs grab a respected name AND create an entirely new role to hire someone else they like too.

Any narrative that the Leafs are cheaping out and reducing staff are pretty much shattered at this point.
 
Apparently the wild named 3 new AGMs last year and he wasn't one of them so him moving on to AGM somewhere else was kind of expected.

As for the draft there's nothing really they can do about that - the season ended and this is when changes are made. They don't want a guy with a foot out the door making their picks anwyays, and they have a month still to prepare without him.
 
Could just be seniority - the guy who was promoted to AGM scouting/personnell Chris Kelleher had been with the org for almost 20yrs.

Sometimes there's just not room to promote deserving guys.

Canuck fans seem to adore the guy. Though that appears to be underpinned by the belief that all of the good picks the team made during his tenure were his selections, and all of the bad picks were cases where Benning or the team’s dasdardly owner overruled him despite his loud protestations.

Which seems a lil suspect.
