The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Patrick Laine is a UFA for cheap. He has a good attitude. Fully healed since January. Might look good on the first line and PP1

I see the allure if you're a team without a ton of 1st unit PP skill and you're cool with hiding him on the 4th line at evens.

Fired in the nick of time before any true longterm damage done. Only longterm damage was losing mitch for nothing but we've been miraculously saved from that too.

Losing Minten and our next two first rounders in exchange for a second round pick + Carlo counts as long-term damage in my books too.

We can mitigate that damage by hopefully getting a decent return for Carlo as well as making sure those first rounders end up being late first round picks. But still, that’s a handicap & opportunity cost for our new management.

Still agree with your general point though. We got off light compared to Calgary and fired the failson right in the nick of time.

I mean he would look good on a PP.

Some good team is going to sign him for $800k.

I’m kind of fascinated to see what Laine does. I honestly wouldn’t put it past him to just retire. The dude’s never played for anything less than star money since his ELC and as a result has banked almost $60M.

Not sure I see him having the drive and/or love of the game to keep playing for peanuts, relatively speaking, just to hang on in the NHL for a bit longer as a bit player when he’s got that money in the bank.

Laine seemed very bullish on himself at today’s presser and because he stayed on LTIR all year, he’s eligible to sign a bonus laden contract as a UFA with a lower base salary

Is that the good attitude you referred to earlier? I feel like he's got a pretty well known bad attitude, which emerged before he was even drafted by shit talking Matthews. Also, the times I saw him play for you the last two years, he can barely move, he's stripped of the puck with ease, and just terrible. Yes, he can stand in that Stamkos spot on the PP, but we have better all around players who can score in more than one way. Hard pass.
