The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Eakins was one of the instructors at my hockey camp growing up and Hes a great fucking dude. Doesn’t qualify him to coach tml but I’ve got a soft spot for him.

and truth be told none of these candidates get me rock hard.

Great dude or no, both of his stints as an NHL head coach have been disastrously bad. And since his last one he’s been coaching in Germany for the past three years, which is a pretty third-rate hockey league.

How much of his lack of success at the NHL level was his poor rosters and how much was his coaching is up for debate, but it’s an unimpressive resume either way.

Not a proponent of "Third time's the charm" these days. Had enough of that with the selections of pluggy mcfucks that didn't work out in spite of however many chances and combos they were forced into.

Or, even they can see a mark.

True, but if so they overplayed their hand a bit trying to extract genuine value for him. If they’d offered Nurse with a draft pick attached for Rielly, they probably could’ve got Bradward to bite, assuming Mo waived his NMC.

Now he’s not around to take advantage of anymore. For now, anyway.

Retention on Nurse should be the starting point of any deal for him. Just a historically terrible contract with lots of term left. Oil have no interest in retention so... good luck.

As for Treliving, they fact there were offers being exchanged multiple times, the Oil definitely had him on the hook for another terrible deal.

It’s going to be fascinating to watch play out. Considering he’s a bad bottom-pair D paid like a stud #1 for four more seasons (until he’s 35), in a sane league it wouldn’t be possible to trade him unless they pay a boatload of assets to a tanking team that’s willing to take on his contract.

All it takes is one really dumb GM, though. Ottawa happily taking Dion Phaneuf’s contract off our hands is a great example of that.

Nurse should be a deal to someone like Van, getting compensated to do so.

It feels like a Ken Holland special though, the man who once paid a 2nd for a cooked Duncan Keith and when asked about the cost? Was I supposed to get him for free?
