The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

It kind of feels like there is an organizational mandate to say absolutely nothing, which is probably smart. Don't give them media anything to chew on. Either that, or the questions sucked. Probably a mix of both.

rule #1 is not to say anything except riffs on "what an exciting opportunity"

the media knows this so they ask general questions because asking specific questions (ie did you talk to Cassidy) usually leads to "no comment"

what also helps rule#1 is to hold the presser ASAP so the coach (and Chayka the other time) can honestly say they started the job 10 mins ago and haven't decided anything except choose their leafs email password

i thought the questions weren't the bad, now that I think about it. ie how do you use data? do you have the blueline you need to play your style?

you're just not going to get any answers because that's all private info

Not sure if it's been mentioned but Hiller and Gruden were both Assistant coaches under Barry Trotz with the Islanders from 2019-2022.

this came out much messier than I hoped, but here's a breakdown of the the Kings team Hiller inherited, the kings team under him, and the kings team after him.

all i wanted to get a sense of was who was on the rosters, their ages, and their general usage - 5v5 time on ice percentage, and ozone-dzone starts.

an asterisk means that that player didn't actually play many games in that period, whether it was because of injury, or of a trade out or a late trade in.

i tried to move players in slots only when there was a major changes in their usage (like with Byfield and Clarke), and otherwise just kept them in line with their previous slot if the usage was similar enough.

might as well complete with the playoffs usage. Kings have lost 5 first rounds in a row. This is how they set up:

Pinnacle of short-sighted stupidity if they trade Knies, even if it's for a #1 D.

You have UFA period opening up and Raddysh and Andersson seemingly available. I don't care if they're not slam dunk or true #1s, or cost a bit too much, or come with some risk. When you get something for free, you almost always accept some flaws. And they should fill the couple of spots through guys like that, or if guys like Karlsson or Hamilton are going to be available get them for modest trade capital and short term risk, and thereby ADD to the team instead of detracting from one key position to fill another.

I won't believe they're seriously entertaining any Knies deal until it happens because it would just be too dumb a move to believe they'd make.
