The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

How many of those above teams were playoff teams? Makes a difference on how much patience the coach has to break in a rookie D.

Well Werenski, Sergachev, Lindholm and Heiskanen did. Schaefer did last year. Hell adding an impact dman makes a big difference to competitive whether they are 19 or 25.

Knies for #2 and Musty could be tidy work. Musty kinda profiles as a Knies-lite right now. Although the temptation to go McKenna Stenberg would be very strong in that scenario.

He’s doing his job.

Trying to max out his top chip is the opposite LOF move (try to trade 3 quarters for a twoonie)
I.e. if your favorite blue chip stock has a blue sky breakout and reaches ridiculous valuation far beyond your wildest dreams, it's sometimes worth selling on it.

And I fully believe that's what he's considering with Knies. Doesn't mean he'll do it, he likely won't. But you bet that he's exploring it!

Quinn Hughes makes it at 20 and Vancouver is in the playoffs. Makar is in the playoffs at 20.

I think the lesson is 19 year old impact dmen make a huge difference for teams. So if you think Reid is that good...

asking for the moon is great

We’ll see if he gets it. I remain skeptical

In this market I think it's basically a lock that he's received offers that exceed Knies' true value. But full futures packages don't really make a boat load of sense for the Leafs right now. There has to be a path to improving short term too for it to make sense!
