The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

it's a stupid question....those are meant to be dodged!!!

also, at some point I would have repeated that line from the opening monologue "I love being the Captain of this team. Just didn't like our season"
Honest question: do you really think speculation would have decreased if he answered those questions like that?

Yeah, trying to sanitysplain our media is a reach. There is no right answer. They have already decided the narrative they want to run with before they even talk to you.

yeah silly to pretend that the media wouldn't have made an even bigger stink if Matthews acted blase and uninterested in the fact the team had to hire a new front office and had been absolutely terrible this year and just said he was just happy to be here no matter what the team did.

who knows? if you give 100 monkeys each a typewriter, at least one will bang out something provocative and unsettling

Regardless, of how perfect or imperfect his answers were, someone will be first to stir the pot.....and others will feel compelled to take sides and have their own spin on it.

I think Auston is smart but the way to own the media as an athlete is not to be honest or outsmart them, it's to outdumb them.

The narrative was already in. The only thing Matthews could have done would have been self immolation on the spot to atone for his sins.

Being honest and forthcoming should have led to less speculation, not more. CJ's report was literally a repeat of Auston's presser. It's like everyone forgot what he said.

But of course it still led to speculation. The stories were already written before he spoke.

that's why you all need to follow Auston's lead

"There is always noise and chatter. Personally, I really don’t pay attention to all of that. I just focus on myself and my teammates on ForumIce"

And btw it's worth discussing and always was no matter which market this is, it's a legit thing and talking point and largely obvious that a guy at his age is gonna want the team to be competitive in the short-term, otherwise he's gonna move on. And it should have been more of a talking point on the day of Auston's presser. I just find it funny that it took CJ repeating what Auston said before it really took off.

And tbh, Auston didn't even have to say it. It's common sense. Every star player in the league would be thinking the same thing.

narrative started ticking when he signed for 4 years instead of max

Nah, facts need not apply. Matthews could have signed a lifetime agreement and this would still be happening. It doesn't matter how many years are on your deal when the media is dangling a trade demand as the narrative

Where it gets dicey and a little annoying is if Auston demands to be traded this summer. But CJ hasn't even reported that. So up to this point, the report is nothing new.

Elite players don't want to stay during a rebuild! Film at 11

Ultimately, finishing near last in the league makes a lot of shitty narratives seem credible.

Speaking of Willy, his presser was hilarious. 30 seconds of him being a baby back bitch and refusing to answer any questions and then a "goodbye." What a sexy beast.

Sure but they've never even needed that. They just made up other shit when we were finishing near the top of the league. The only time that changed was last off season when they two guys they wouldn't blame for anything apparently got us to within a game of the ECF.

We were a force and unlucky then apparently. Because our media twits like Brad and Craig and thought guys like that were what was missing here.
